Hit an old park which gives up Indians, Mercs, seated dimes, and older wheats.......it is getting tough to get anything any more....it is big area but very few coins come out. I remembered a few areas with tons of nails and bought a 5" coil for that reason....well I gave it a go and snagged two Wheats amongst the nails.....talk about needles in a HAY stack!!......1919 and 1916.....large pcs. of lead I could not just leave in the ground.......My true value nail aprin was full of big items......it came to the point I had to unload it and pack it in.....Tiny 22 shells where very numerous.....they sound like they are deep but were not.....the jewlery or what ever it is was a surprise....My thought is there has got to be some lost rings here somewhere.....but I got to dig tons of tabs....I am not sure if it will be worth it.

Great job Mattock Man, good to see how much trash you were prepared to wade through...

It gets a bit much after a while doesn't it !

Tabs, ring pulls, and beaver tails will masquerade as gold hits:ninja:, I guess there is no way around this...:sadwalk:

I don't believe any of us could do any better than you've done,
if we don't want to miss gold rings we must dig the #$&%* lot !!!:surrender:

You said ~ ".....Tiny 22 shells where very numerous.....they sound like they are deep but were not....."

I guess they were sounding faint because of being so small and being of thin metal...
Was the depth shown on the screen deep also, or shallow ( matching the sound ??? )

I would get discouraged. I'll be interested in seeing your future posts about the 5in coil, I've considered getting one for my Explorer for quite a while. If you really want those gold rings you are right in digging all those trash targets. I have a friend who finds more than his share of gold rings but he digs several hundred trash targets to get them. Those little .22 casings can really be a pain. They hit close enough to IHs that I can't pass them up. Have you ever hunted a home site that has had a slate roof? The nails they used to attach the slate shingles have a square or octagonal head and are made of some kind of copper alloy I think. With the large head they hit almost identical to an IH penny. It is very frustrating to hunt a site that has a bunch of these because they are usually at the same depth you find the IH pennies. Good luck with the little coil, I hope to start seeing your gold finds soon.

Have you ever tried taking one of those copper nails you were speaking of and all your Indianheads and sat down with the Explorer and learned them in a program? I have done this for a fair ground....some twist tops where like Indians, not all but some....so I Learned (rejected) all caps I could find there and then learned (accepted) all indians and then see which ones I could not hear when air tested. I then used edit to get the one Indian I could not hear and found out it was too close to a cap that it was not possible to edit out so I found out I had to dig only some caps but not all of them.

If it is dead nut same as Indian it will not work, but hey its worth a try.....I have MORE patients than General Hospital!

I would say they were quiet and distant sounding, I use advanced smart screen cursor, and they hit between nickle and foil, sounding a bit wavey or scratchy like a thin gold ring with stones may sound, thats the only reason why I dug them....the depth showed between 6"and 4"....the ground has layers of sticks, leaves, and pine needles so it is not easy to get to dirt level...I had to scrape ground with boot to get soil to show and get a better reading....but that got tiring after a while, but after doing that it gave a closer ID on depth......roughly 2 inches. I just had to try digging diff. signals and they were my most abundant that day....NO GOLD....The 2" to 6" mats of pine needles don't help much.

I don't know if would do any good as the nails register pretty much the same on both screens of my Explorer II. There might be a slight difference, I just don't remember. Thankfully I don't run into them too often, at least in quantities to be a big problem. I didn't save any of them or if I did they were thrown out when I emptied my junk bucket. Next time I find a site with those copper nails I'll save a few and try your suggestion. I've always run this Explorer with an open screen. When I had my original Explorer I tried using discrimination patterns and the learn function but I didn't care for the detector going silent. I'm always afraid that I will miss a good target. I ran my CZ's the same way. It took me a while to get used to all the noise but now I hunt with all my detectors using no discrimination. I also hunt with an X-Terra 50, an MXT and a Technetics T2.

Nice arsonal of detectors Phil....I only use discrim. when I don't feel much like digging.....when I only have a couple of hours to hunt just so I don't waste time on annoying junk....I like all metal also.....but I need a good 6-8 hrs time to do a good job....I mix it up a bit just to try something new....its fun having a detector you can do many things with.......

it takes me a long time to hunt a productive site. I grid hunt a good site from a couple different directions and then re-hunt the site with another detector. Don't usually find much after covering it with the Explorer but everyone misses coins. I will say that I've never found a silver coin when re-hunting a site already hunted with the Explorer.

Good stuff Mattockman !!!
