hand held pointer versus probe

Hi all, I have a hand held garret pro-pointer right now but, I know alot of people opt for the in line probe. What are the advantages of having the probe versus a hand held pinpointer? My pro pointer will sound off about 3 inches away from the target. What is the distance on a probe? Also where is the best place to buy a probe and what about warranty? Has anyone had any major issues with there probe? Thank you.

I get good depth with my X-1 probe. If I want more depth I just up the sensitivity, but I've never had to do that. I like my probe because it differentiates between silver, iron and junk like aluminum with multitones. I can also use the pinpoint mode with it and know exactly where the coin is. But...that's just me and my personal preference. If someone else uses a hand held probe and likes it, that's fine with me. To each his own.:)

I have both the Garrett ProPointer as well as the X-1 Probe on my E-TRAC. I use the Garrett with my X-TERRAs, the Advantage and the XLPro. I use the X-1 with the E-TRAC to separate and differentiate targets (by sound) within the hole. And I also use the Garrett with the E-TRAC after removing dirt two or three times and not having yet recovered the target. To me, the ProPointer is useful in this instance as the frequency of the vibration lets me know when I am right next to the coin. I have a problem determining the remaining depth with the SunRay. If you get the SunRay, you won't regret it. Just remember to switch back to the coil after retrieving the target as not doing so becomes very frustrating! But if you get the X-1, I'd recommend not getting rid of the Garrett as (for me) it serves a purpose. JMHO HH Randy

I've been using a Sunray Probe on my Sovereign GT for a couple years now. Now that I have an E-Trac I'm planning on going back to a standard pinpointer, the Garrett Pro to be exact.
As someone said, "to each their own." I personally find it much more convenient and quicker to have a pinpointer at my side that I can whip out quickly. I started getting annoyed with the whole unclipping, flipping a switch, holstering and flipping the switch back motion with the Sunray. It's quicker for me to just reach to my waist and grab the Garrett.

Matter of preference though. The Sunray is a great probe but on the flipside there are a few pinpointers that have gotta pretty good lately.

I have them both, carry & use them both for the exact same reason(s) that Randy just stated.----They both serve a very useful function when used in conjunction with one another.----I do, on occasion get a tad of "cross talk" between the Etrac & Pro Pointer but that's easily taken care of by turning the detector or doing a "noise cancel".---I've gotten so I won't do a hunt without both of them as they are BOTH VERY useful (X-1 & Pro Pointer).---The Etrac comes in kinda handy to!!! --------Del

Ditto with what D&P-OR said. Cant' make it any clearer than what he said. Those are the differences, and that's good for some folks. Others choose one or the other. Get em both and decide yourself what you like. Betcha a hot fudge sunday that you keep and use both of em. jim

How deep did you say the X=1 gets? any deeper than the 3 inches the Garrett pointer gets?

In all honesty my Sunray goes about as deep. Don't need to go much deeper with a probe or pinpointer.
Want a deep one then check out the Pistol Pulse Probe.

Sun Ray is amazing. The pinpoint mode tells the user how far the item is away by the loudness of the sound

The discrimination ability of the X-1 is excellent in cellar holes and various trashy areas. The whole process of unclipping and switching is a pain, especially when I forget to flip the switch back to coil and detect my digger for 10 minutes until I wake up. Good set-up, IMO, to have both.

The overall opinion is that the Sun Ray Probe is hands down - the best - target ID from probe displayed on ET's screen - no wasted time digging junk targets - great depth, impossible to loose it, etc.

I understand why the Sun Ray Probe is the best ... but this is why I have two Garrett Pro Pointers.

(1) Didn't want to add 11 oz. to an already heavy machine.

(2) The Pro Pointers have their own power supply - no extra draw on the machine's battery = more available detecting time - if needed.

(3) And the most important thing to me ... I usually mark three to six good targets at a time with yellow tent stakes - then I put the machine and headphones in a safe place and return to the targets with the Pro Pointer in one hand and my digger in the other.
This system works really well - your not taking your headphones on and off and put the machine down and picking it back up again all day long.
Hunting seems to save a lot of time - it's less work for me and it's also less wear and tear on the equipment - it's also nice to get a break from carrying the machine around on a hot day !
I couldn't hunt this way if my pin pointer was hard wired to the E-Trac. :detecting:
