Harley Davidson an' MDing

cjw

New member
This will be my first summer MDing.

I would like to combine it with my motorcycle. ( H.D. Heritage Softail Classic )

I plan on putting my MD equip. in the saddle bags.

Anybody else here 'ride' to the 'hunt'?

Any advice for me?

Funny you should mentioned that just saw some post today from JOHNMARKHAM doing this.

Just this last weekend (Sat.) I took the bike out for a ride as we had a break from heavy rains all week and some high winds. I decided to break down a detector and toss it along with other needed accessories into my Tour-Master Extra Large sissy bar bag. I don't have the saddle bags.
Since it was still cool out, I had by black beanie on, then a neck gaiter pulled up to the bottom of my sun glasses. So you really can't see any part of my face. Oh - and my flat black lid (half helmet - Calif. requirement). That always get looks while riding, but when you look directly back at them, most will snap away as if they didn't notice me - lol. :ninja:
Then pull in a park and folks stare - then get off the bike and reach into the bag and pull out a big digging knife:devil:
Then whip out and assemble the detector:blink:
Didn't find much but it was all good riding and detecting. At least I got a couple bucks in clad, but I had already started out with a full tank.
Anyway, I noticed a few folks left after I arrived, then a few moved to keep a distance, kids cleared the tot lot to give me a shot, but a couple sleazy young gals walked right up and were really friendly:biggrin: No wonder why some gals get themselves in trouble:nono: total stranger - maybe it was two of them and one of me:huh:
I started the bike & detector thing last spring. It's like enjoying 2 hobbies on one outing.

good for you....at least you're riding. I won't get out here ( ontario Canada) until March.....and like you, I hope to combine it this summer with MDing.

I have saddle bags and a Kuryakyan bag so I should have enough room to carry the equip.

"At least I got a couple bucks in clad, but I had already started out with a full tank." lol ..I hear ya'.

I assume the Garrett 'tecter and pointer will not be botherd by bike vibrations? I wonder how tough this equipment is?? If you drop or bump / hit a Garrett detector....do they hold-up well?

yes i do this, i ride my harley most of the time to the beach..
i have an ultra classic 2003 and i pull i small tote trailer with it for my md stuff, works great for me, i get the best of both worlds,,:clapping::detecting::thumbup:

You have a nice set-up John.
Does your detector fit in the trailer in one piece?

either way...good for you..'best a' both'...I look forwart to it.

yes detector , scooper, cooler, chairs and all my otherstuff all fits in with plenty of room to spare..and cheap on gas too....:clapping::detecting:

I have had no problems with the detector. I just break it down and make sure no digging tools go in the same compartment. Don't want the cord against any digging tool edge. So I have separate compartments for headphones, digging tools/probes/pinpointer/spare battery etc. Depending where I go, I'll sometimes take 2 detectors.
What I like to do is put protective covers over the main unit to protect the display/screen (for display detectors), but most times I take a detector or two that has no display screen.
I'll also lock my half helmet to the bike (kids get curious) and usually take the gloves etc. with me.
When it's been raining real good, I'll use my waterproof boots. Once the feet get soaked in the field, the ride home is not the highlight of the trip. I don't have any lowers on the bike or any fairing to keep wind tamed. No windshield either.
If the gear gets muddy - take along a travel pack of baby wipes - works well.
Should the hands get cold - get a hold of that V-Twin by the fins and they will warm up. If that ain't good enough, you can snatch that exhaust, but not me.... chrome looks better without burn prints:biggrin:
As much as I can - I try and keep an eye on the bike.
On the colder days (you sometimes get the park to yourself), I'll haul a thermos of black coffee for go-juice breaks.
Always take a cell - phones are not common here at parks, schools, etc.
As tempting as it might be, just because it's a bike, doesn't give rights to park anywhere in the park as you desire - don't ask me how I know:veryangry:
Best of all - have a good time. Sometimes I'll wonder (ride) around exploring parks, schools, streams, fields etc., especially ones I never seen. It just seems easier & enjoyable to do - ride bike & good gas mileage. A few times I didn't detect for one reason or another.

Glad I read your post. I ride a 2005 FLSTSC/I and never thought about riding out to the field with the gear, since I just got my Scorpion this past friday. After giving it some thought I think I will use the bottom half of a fishing pole hard case strapped to the sissy bar for the upper and lower sections and I can put the control head in the saddle bag.
You guys already got me excited to go.

Thanks,

Ace

lol..nah i have to ride EVERY DAY.....
its another story..but im glad i live in fla..
but teenage sons are to blame....:argue::hot:

I agree......I don't want my bike 'out of sight'.

Good point you make about the boots....I'm not sure how I'll deal with that. My HD boots are not the best for walking around for hours.
thanks for your comments

Sometimes i carry my detector across the handle bars on my motorcycle. I dont have any saddles bags. I have never had any problems, but i dont normally travel more than 4=5 miles like that.

well for me its about 57 miles to the east coast or 85 miles to the west coast,so its a bit of a ride for me to go and hunt but i don't mind riding when weather cooperates..for me its the best of both worlds..i get my exercise by walking the beach hunting and my enjoyment, then a nice ride home .:clapping::detecting::thumbup::usaf:

I've got an old Kawasaki KZ650 that refuses to die, so I strap the ACE on it now and then. I use my detecting gloves as a cushion on the tail piece, then lay the ACE across it (Cushions the vibration), with the shaft retracted. I then use a heavy grade bungee wrapped around the detector shaft and the rear turn signal stalks repeatedly. I snug it all down quite tightly. The detector sticks out a bit on each side as it's sitting horizontaly, but has never been a problem. I also keep the ACE rain cover on and face it plastic side toward the wind flow, so it and the plastic battery cover don't blow off. And I've had zero problem on many extended highway trips. I also bring an additional extra plastic grocery bag along to tie around the head if caught in rain, or its windy and I'm paranoid about the unit blowing apart on the highway. I'm reasonably careful with the ACE but I don't molly coddle it. It's a tough little thing.
