Headphones???

How many of you do not use headphones? I have noticed that the deep, say 8" targets sound off just as loud as the 1".Personally I feel they get in the way and I really can't hear my pro pointer unless I adjust off of my ears. Just a thought....Would I really miss anything?? Until recently I never used them and always found my share. Please... someone better agree with me...LOL.

the headphones that came with my etrac are the first headphones ive ever used. i hate the way the cord gets "in the way" but i must say i like headphones. so much easier to be "one" with the detector. ive only used them a couple times. i just got the etrac a couple weeks ago. i know this doesnt help you much. but i never thought id like them, turns out i do.

I prefer not to use headphones for the reason you stated. The E-Trac has plenty of volume to hear all the sounds it makes. With that said with out headphones the E-Trac goes through batteries twice as fast. Also it is noisy enough to draw a crowd. So I just hang my headphones around my neck a bit unhandy but works. If it is going to be a short hunt and I am going home where I can recharge the battery I leave the headphones in the truck.

I hunted without headphones for the first month or so then I got a pair of inexpensive Chinese headphones - they were a lot better than nothing at at all - then I got a pair of Ultimate Grey Ghosts - wow - I'll never hunt with out them again ! I know for a fact that you can easily miss a deep signal with out a good set of headphones - and you can't hunt near road traffic and you might as well forget about going to the beach - I've tried it - without a good set of headphones you can't really hear whats going on with cars going by or if the waves are breaking at the beach.

A cheap set of headphones will cost you around $25.00 - a top end set will cost you around $125.00 .
Question ... if you bought a $1500.00 stereo and hooked up a pair of $25.00 speakers to it - how good do you think it would it sound ?

If you really want to understand all the subtle info in the tones of the E-Ttrac a top notch pair of headphones is a must.If you are just out digging shallow clad then they are not needed but will still help keep you from gaining unwanted attention from both man and beast.

I suppose in a high noise environment you have no choice but to use 'em.

I find them quite annoying. If you have deep 'on' then there is no need to listen for subtle anything.

I hunt with a group of awesome detectorists and they all use headphones. It really gets under my skin because when I want to talk to them while we are detecting I feel like I am interrupting them.

When I am out in the deep woods I really want to hear everything around me, including the sounds my detector is making. Bucks in heat have a habbit of sneaking up on you when you are on the ground hacking through roots.

you can put headphones on half-up on the head, you can use only one cup with other on the head. its depends what your headphones are -some are very tide some are to loose. for me for sound best koss ur 30 original minelab , for construction Peltor noise cancel headphones. put ur 30 dynamics in to peltor and you have best-strongest headphones-good luck

Care to explain ......
I have tried about every possible combination of settings on the E-Trac since it was released.The only time I did not hear an improvement in tonal nuances with quality headphones was in two tone ferrous.
I have no doubt that wearing phones in certain environments would be dangerous and would never encourage a person put themselves in danger.However if I am in a safe location searching for older deeper coins I would not even consider detecting without my Sunray Pro Golds.They make it much easier to discern the difference between a 9" plus silver dime (on edge occasionally) and a deep iron false in multi-tones.
Headphones are in no way a must unless you want to get peak performance out of any high end machine......

Str8 talk about head phones. If you are seriously searching for good deep targets you will wear head phones. You can always take them off or half wear them but if you do not have them then you have a very expensive machine that you are not getting the full advantage of.

There are places that I dont wear them but mostley and always in the best places I hunt I wear them even if Im out in the woods.

Advantages: longer battery life, less interferance, great tone quality to discrim with, Less kid/inquisition magnet, stealthy, Mine are very cumfuy and keep the bugs n skeeters out of my ears in the woods. Dont sunburn my ears. And yes I can pretend I dont hear ya talking, Most important I can hear excellent all the signals the machine can come up with.

IF you get a good high quality pair you will not have as many dislikes with the cord or cumfyness. And one last thing. for me If the guy Im with doesnt have a pair I dont invite him to come with me as I know he will not be as serious, as intent or as focusd as I am...dont want to talk....want to find cool stuff then after I can brag it up with time to talk later.

Get headphones!

Well said Mr. Shovelhead! I have bad hearing (too many years small game hunting without headphone type ear protectors). I own a pair of Grey Ghost NDT's, I never leave home without them. I don't like the one's that came with Mr. ET, they suck! Can hear way too much outside noise. With the NDT's, I have to lift one earcup when I see someone's lips moving......NGE

Headphones are a must for me, I have some high tone hearing loss and tinitis. I used the Koss that came with the E-Trac until just recently when I got a set of high quality Liberty headphones. What a world of difference, I can now hear the definition of tones much better and volume adjustment makes it much better in switching from TTF to a conductive pattern. A heavy duty cord and long enough that they dont pull on my head. If you decide to upgrade you will not regret it.

Check page 60/61 of the E-Trac manual. You may want to adjust your volume gain if you don't want everything have the same volume level.
