Eric, excellent answer. One that should be given more often. The factory default screen setting (disc. pattern) is to only edit out iron. That leaves the poor beginner to deal with a flock-of-sick-geese sounding orchestra. Not a problem for those that are familiar with the language, but a pain in the b*tt for someone who's used to other types of machines. So you're right: A person should start by accepting only copper pennies and up (or some other such very high disc. pattern) in the upper right 1/4 or 1/8 of the screen. Then they should go to a spot that's prolific with modern clad, and get the hang of common penny/quarter/car-key type sound differences. After getting the hang of that, they can lower their disc. down to allow in square tabs and other such mid items. Hunt that way for awhile in a place prolific with signals. Then several hours later drop down to allow in nickels. Then finally foil, etc..... Pretty soon your ears will be doing the work (passing items you don't want), and you'll recognized the ascending/descending tone values without thinking about it.

I've heard the same beginner's advice for the Excaliber: Crank the disc. to the max, so it only finds pennies and up for the first day. The second day, drop it one notch (so zinc comes in), and keep dropping one notch for each day. By the 18th day (there's 18 notches) you'll be on wide open audio disc. and it'll make perfect sense.

Howdy Y'all
I'm new to the wonder from down under and havent had mine out but a few times now, I have the EX ll running the prest with iron mask at -10, then set theshold lowered down some, then every thing else in preset, including sensitivity in auto 16. I'm finding clad at a good rate.It finds every deep coin in my test garden, so I am happy with it so far. Later...........Hombre

Some really great suggestions. I also use/used the DFX and like the XLT there are just a lot of settings that most people didnt need to be messing with. For me i think the Explorer is much easier... you just have to read the manual and you will realize which settings REALLY affect the SOUND vs those that affect the DEPTH. My suggestion along with the others would be get a great pair of headphones and get the TONES the way you like them. Make ONE setting change at a time and work with found targets already in the ground. As far as using others settings... try and find a guru hunter thats in YOUR area of the country.

This link is one of my first post when I got the EXII. You can see I was trying to figure this thing out. This might give some insight from someone {me} who was going thru what most all new EX users go thru.. I hardly use my whites anymore , and I dig less trash with the EXII now, than the whites. It will come together, but it takes some time. I had 8 years experience with vlf's before I got the EX. It is not a vlf , but after you learn it , it is just as easy to use.. stick with it..HH..LaDigger

It will null over iron, if the iron hits in a blacked out portion (1/3 or so left hand side of side of screen). Or you can opt to hunt in ferrous mode, and keep the left hand side of the screen "opened up". In that case, you will get grunts (low tones) off iron. I never bother with "iron mask" button or master controls. I just elect what areas I want to black out by the edit controls.

But you're avoiding the point. Why are you already trying to "trick it out" and go into advanced questions, when you're not even (apparently) taking the advice to start simple, and dig hundreds of targets? There is no substitute for the school of hard knocks.

Iron Mask is NOT some special circuit that kicks in like it sounds as if it might be - it's just a quick way of creating a discrimination pattern on the screen where the screen will be open from top to bottom, but only partially left to right. Forget IM for now, just open that 3/4" square in the upper right corner and black out the rest of the screen. You won't find nickels, but most other common coins including silver and other good items. It'll really tame the orchestra of sounds you'll be hearing. It'll null a lot, but it will work fine....don't worry about needing to hear a threshold - I started this way and found 80 or so silver coins with this pattern in a 1 - 2 acre area in town. It's the easiest way to start....the default coin pattern is stupid as they scanned in as many coins that they could get from around the world - 99% of them you will never find in the US.....just a lot of junk will come in in that area. Remember look for nice consistent repeatable signals - not warbly ones that change pitch as you swing back and forth - wired shapes like can slaw makes weird sounds most of the time -- most of the time wierd sounds that are repeatable are junk. After a while you'll recognize things that sound "round." Hope this helps.
