Highest ferrous #'s on u.s. coins w/etrac

I get a lot of silver clad that start out as FE - 27's at first - then after a few more passes with the coil they come down in the normal FE -12 range.

21 seems to be a number I remember seeing quite a bit, but its not consistant. Might be there on one swing, 17 on the next. Good indicator of nails or the like mixed in with a good repeatable tone....at least to me.

I've actually (on rare occasions) had the FE # hit as high as 27 on deep dimes (even a deep clad dime once).---I think their is a lot of ferrous "junk" in the ground when that happens & the FE of course doesn't "lock on" by no means, it always does a lot of moveing.---Even the CO #'s do a little "moveing", but they're in a "range" that gives a good clue.---I have FE 28 thru 35 "blacked out" as I don't feel there is any risk in doing that.---But I am VERY cautious about knocking (blacking) out anything above the 27 FE line & would rather tolerate a "tad" of ferrous "blips" than risk missing a deep, difficult target.----Even on the Etrac, the MAIN thing to always remember is to hunt by tones.---Tones & consistency of tones (even if it's a one way tone) ALWAYS comes first--everything else comes behind that!---That is if you want to find those deep, tough targets that 90% of the other hunters have walked right over the top of----the Etrac will get 'em for u!!! :)--------Del

Wow. I need to start digging more of my targets. I pass up a lot of targets that read 15/17 - 45/48 because I always think it is going to be a soda can.

Hi guys,
Well you guys were right! I hunted a new park for the first time last night. I remembered this thread and what you guys were saying here so I told myself that I was going to try to dig these hits that had a higher FE# which I normally would not dig up. Well, at about 8 inches I got a 15-45 and it turned out to be silver! Yeah it's only a 64 rosie but silver is silver... right! All my silvers have been in the 11/13-45/48 range. I have had my E Trac for about 6-7 months so I'm still learning, only been swinging for about a year and a half! That was silver 25 so far this for year me! Thanks for advice guys!

Yes, the numbers (and cursor) on the Etrac tell you a whole lot--they are VERY good.---But even with the Etrac, use them as a guide & confirmation without getting totally & completely reliant on them.-----If you dig some of those questionable numbers that are getting a good & consistant "hit" (no matter what the numbers are saying)--you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you bring out of that hole sometimes.---True, you will recover some junk to---but, isn't that part of "the name of the game" here?---That's what some of the other guys are saying here to, I guess I just put it in a little different words.---I guess the bottom line is--don't just DEMAND that those #'s be in a certain range ALL the time before you will dig.----It just might be the catch of a lifetime in this dirt fishin hobby!! ;)-----Del

I was worried about the possibility of getting low tones on coins more frequently than I'd like. After alot of trial and error, I got things setup nicely. Ended up digging a '47 dime right in the front yard the other night, and pulled an '02 barber out of a park the day after that! The '47 read 11-44 no variations, but the barber was surrounded by very close iron stuff, read a varying 22/11/35 - 40/44/45 (switching to fast on, deep off ,high trash, seemed to get on it a lil better than deep on, fast off, high trash did). Pulled a 47 wheatie a few inches from the iron pieces right after digging the barber too. I think I may not have even stopped if I had been running conductive tones with the iron nearby, which is all that site and alot of places I run in.
