How close to Southern Minnesota is diggable ground?

pilot

New member
Thinking of taking a road trip this weekend and was wondering how far I am going to have to drive to get to some diggable ground. I live 50 miles north of Mason City Iowa. Would help if there was a casino nearby so my wife has something to do!

Thanks for any info.

Hey Kim,

I grew up in Montevideo, MN.

Right now I am in very Southern WI, almost IL, and the ground is thawed in some spots but not most.

Chris

Omaha and points north to the MN border have 6-13 inches of snow cover right now  Lots of Casinos though.

It's a bit of drive, but the ground is frost free here in Southern Michigan (For the time being). There are 3 major casinos in Detroit (MGM, Motor City and Greektown) and one across the river in Windsor Ontario as well.

Uggg! Snow...I was able to get out for my first hunt last week...now there's 6 inches of that horrid white stuff laying on the ground! Oh well...

Kim, I live in the Waterloo area and your going to have to get about hour or so south of here to get in to thewed ground

Well here in Ottumwa, Ia. it was not frozen 'til the last couple of day's....now frozen some & will be much worse by this weekend.
Maybe in the wood's it would be alright!

Kim,

Where are you located at? I'm over in Kasson, MN just west of Rochester. I was out over the weekend with my Explorer finally but there's still good frost in the ground. There's hardly any so ow left just in accumulated areas-- we had maybe 8-10" total for the season thus far...

Did You Ever Consider Getting Her A Detector And Go Hunting :twodetecting:

It Worked For Some Of Us

Baniticey, I did buy 2 detectors when I first decided to metal detect. She thought it sounded fun and was all for it but decided after a couple times out she wasn't interested anymore. I usually go alone or with a good friend that bought one after I showed him mine. I wish she would try it again though because I actually know what I am doing now and I think part of the problem was the weight of the 505. I have the Etrac now and she could use my 705 which is quite a bit lighter to swing. Thanks for the info. everyone...looks like ice fishing again this weekend!!

I hunt year round here in Ohio - a few things I've learned about hunting and digging in very cold weather ...

( 1 ) Grind a very sharp point on your digger - this makes it a lot easier to dig in frozen ground.

( 2 ) Don't even try to hunt in areas that are bare ground or have very short grass - they freeze the fastest and the deepest.

( 3 ) Digging is much easier - even after some very cold nights in areas where the grass has not been cut for a long time or never cut at all - and where grass is folded over or in clumps.
Digging in the woods is usually pretty easy all winter long - even when it's been down to 10 or 20 degrees for a long time - the decaying leaves really help keep the frost out of the ground.

( 4 ) A Minelab factory Tech told me this over the phone two years ago ...
It's OK to hunt in very cold weather with our metal detectors - but what ever you do - DO NOT ever bring your machine from very cold weather and put it next the heater in your car house.
If your machine warms up to fast - condensation can form in your electronics - a very expensive repair !
For the last few years I've double wrapped the control box on my machine with a heavy terry cloth beach towel and put it in the factory Minelab carry bag before I put it in the car or bring it into the house - never had any problems.
