How important is having a positive attitude while swinging?

Skill and putting in the time with your MD means a lot but ...

If we let our attitude dictate how attentive we are to the signal or screen by thinking in our minds there is nothing here and we start getting depressed we might give up and miss something. We can be vigilant but the ground has to have something under it too. All the wishful thinking in the world will not give you something when it's probably not there.

Like for me right now it's 41

And attitude works in your favor especially when 100 detectorists before you had a crappy attitude and wouldn't dig a signal because they made themselves believe there was nothing down there so why bother.

Why wouldn't you want to have a positive attitude? There have been times when I went out and got skunked, but I didn't let that bother me. Just getting out is a positive in my book and learning what your machine is telling you will pay off in the end. Hit those hunted out places and maybe try some griding and start swinging that coil King. I know there has to be some stuff around where you live and I doubt that everyone who has hunted these places had a Minelab in there hand. Now get out there with your Minelab and start posting those keepers that everyone else left behind.:detecting: HH.

A positive attitude in metal detecting is pretty much a no brainer. Whether your hitting an old place you have been before or a new place you have never been to or just an old tot lot. You are hunting because you want to and expect to find something or you wouldn't be there in the first place, my opinion only. It works for me, never do I go away without something. HH John

I am not sure but to me it doesn't matter, difference is if I'm tired or not, If I am tired I am more likely to ignore "crappy" signals.
But if I'm not tired I dig everything none ferrous.

I concentrate 100% on detecting and not my mood/attitude lol don't have time for that.
Almost as work... Why only give 50% of your capabilities when you can give a 100%?

Only one time I can think of it did pay.. I bent my small shovel (digger) and I thought well this better be worth it!!
And I got a silver coin out of the hole .

So to conclude my thoughts on it, it may help but only very little, it can keep you going on a bad day if your not tired but else I don't see how it would help you.

Good Hunting!
Eu :beers:

Attitude is paramount to get the goodies. When you start a hunt your attitude is positive with the possibilities of making some great finds and you keep your nose to the grindstone. When you find yourself getting skunked after a period of time you (not you in particular but some detectorists) tend to get a little demoralized and then the tendency is to speed up to cover more ground and find something. When that happens you become less attentive, bypass or not even notice the deep, weak and iffy signals and the only thing you hear are those darn Memorial pennies and clad dimes. Do not change from the pace, attentiveness or attitude you began the hunt with.

If you are hunting in heavy trash...don't be afraid to lower your discrim. and maxamize your seperation.....you will get the shallower and mid coins that others have missed. run your gain between 7-8 , if too high you will get distorted audio...sweep 1 slow thousand 2 slow thousand per left to right wide sweep and over lap a little....and circle anything sounding sorta good.....location is the key....heavy trash means every 2 to 3 inches is iron or targets.....medium is every foot or so is a target and light is every few swings or more while moving forward .....heavy trash warrants 8-14 disc. medium warrants 14-18 and light trash warrants 18-max stable. 5-8 inch coil for heavy trash....8-12 inch coil for medium trash and 10-max inch coil for light trash or what ever works best for you. These are just my guide lines I go by.....and yes I do mix it up some....good luck. I am gonna push one more thing...you will have an advantage in medium to light trash with the new coils....SE Pro 11" and SEF 10x12 coils.....and even in high trash sometimes....but smaller is always better for shallower coins.

I'm still using the slimline coil. I can't wait till I get the 12x10 coil. I'm saving my money for moving shortly. Once I move out then I can go on buying binge.

WHat do you mean, "lower my disc"? I have it wide open except for nails. You mean I should knock out the Foil.Pull Tabs,Crowncaps, & Screwcaps?

Most people I have seen have not had the MD powerhouse that I have in my hands, you are right. One guy I seen at our State Park which people thinks is hunted out but it is not for sure had an old Bounty Hunter with a bandaid on his shaft cause he broke it, doesn't use headphones and the SOB is pulling more stuff out than I am. He is moving faster than me but his swing is not level throughout and he doesn't use a probe either. In fact tomorrow I am going there and I hope I see him. I am going to crush that worm with some finds tomorrow!

His MD looks like a Bounty Hunter Tracker II and runs at 6.7kHz so it'll go deep but could miss the finer stuff.

SHOOT!.....I meant sensitivity...... Not discrim...now I cannot edit post....I hate the 30 min. limit to edit on here now.....Phone call distracted me....or I would have gotton back to ya sooner and edited post......drats....

So lower sensitivity in trashier areas will help? I usually run mine in auto at 22 but I know from being on here and reading that it becomes a mixed bag and can actually hurt you to a degree. I was experimenting with manual 24 today for a bit. I know you get more falsing but I could still pick up signals.

Bud...if your in "heavy" trash turn your sens. down to 8-16 manual..and make sure gain is at 7-8, no higher than that.....and adjust from there....I bet you will sneek in on some masked targets you have missed before...

I'll try it. Thanks for the tip. What is the concept of doing it this way? How does it work? Are we turning down the sensitivity so that the SE doesn't overload itself and in a sense it sees things a little more clearly in trashy situations with these settings?

Your doing it to get better seperation between closely related targets.....

Next time your out, turn on machine and crank up sens. and see how close to the car you can get before it sounds off....then lower sens. and see if you can get closer to it.....it's the same to targets in the ground.....

you will loose some depth but get better seperation between targets and have a lot better chance at finding the shallower masked targets.

It is just one step to take in high trash areas....start low and slowly work it higher (sens)....I start at 8-10....and if I get some good sounds barely coming in and need a better audio ID of it I must be at the breaking point for audio...so I slowly turn up sens. till I get better audio ID and then work it for a while and cover a small area....then I will go back to starting point and turn it up some more and see if I can snipe out a few more that are a little deeper....etc......
