Sunday I went out detecting a piece of land that contained an entire division of men in the winter of 1861. I started digging out one of the winter huts when I got a nice signal and dug down 8-9" when I saw a large silver coin.
I put the coin in a safe spot until I got home. Here are the before and afters at the house.
Fast forward to this afternoon- I headed back out to where I found the quarter, and about 30 feet away, I found a nice fire pit. Unfortunately, you'll see all the bottles are broken. It appears there are remains to a champagne bottle, a whiskey bottle, a bitters bottle, and a pepper sauce bottle. I also found the top of a champagne glass, some bone fragments, a brass belt adjuster, an Eagle I vest button w/ ringlet, some melted lead, a few .69s, a gun screw(?), and what I think is a bone pipe bowl. Its definitely not clay. The only finds from the pit not pictured are all the square nails.
Thanks,
Jeff in Mid-MO
