Hunting an 1861 winter encampment in Missouri

Sunday I went out detecting a piece of land that contained an entire division of men in the winter of 1861. I started digging out one of the winter huts when I got a nice signal and dug down 8-9" when I saw a large silver coin.

I put the coin in a safe spot until I got home. Here are the before and afters at the house.

Fast forward to this afternoon- I headed back out to where I found the quarter, and about 30 feet away, I found a nice fire pit. Unfortunately, you'll see all the bottles are broken. It appears there are remains to a champagne bottle, a whiskey bottle, a bitters bottle, and a pepper sauce bottle. I also found the top of a champagne glass, some bone fragments, a brass belt adjuster, an Eagle I vest button w/ ringlet, some melted lead, a few .69s, a gun screw(?), and what I think is a bone pipe bowl. Its definitely not clay. The only finds from the pit not pictured are all the square nails.

Thanks,

Jeff in Mid-MO

Very nice dig Jeff. The lady is in great condition too.

Beautiful coin! I am a big time bottle digger to. It's a lot of fun stumbling on to a trash pit or dump and pulling out nice complete bottles. Unfortunately I find more broken ones than whole ones. Most times it depends on the area and location of the dump. I am currently digging a campsite that was also used as a dump up until about 1900. It's like heaven for me to be able to dig civil war relics and bottle dig in the same spot!! Also love the clay pipe.

There are plenty of other huts to be dug. Can't wait to see those finds. CCH

The f75 is working well for you. I know you were a gold bug man for quite a while. Any comments on it as I only hunt in the all metal when using it. CCH

Hot Damn thats a sweet Q! :surprised: I am very impressed with how you retrieved and carefully placed the glass for the pics...really a great post and hunt!:please::thumbup:
