~I dug a Silver 3 Cent Piece!!!!!!!!~

New member
I went digging today with Diggerdan, we hunted two places first place was a farm that was gonna be tore down, owner was building a new house next door. I got 3 FIRSTS for me today

I got a deep, bouncy, 12-24 ....17-28.....12-28, depth meter showed around 8 inches, at about 5 inches I see a TINY silver disk, I pulled it out and right away I was excited. I yelled at Dan, "no way your gonna believe what I just dug!" A 3 cent silver!!!!! too bad the back had some funky green corrosion on it, the date is 90% worn off, with a loupe I can see 185-....I know it is a Type 1 so it has to be 1851 to 1853. I don't even care, worn or not I am THRILLED. I never dreamed I would ever dig one in a yard, possibly in a field but not at a farm yard....

My second first ever was a 1968 silver kennedy half dollar. I have dug barbers, walking Liberty, and franklin halves but NEVER a Kennedy, so once again, I was happy!

And my 3rd first of the day was a 1942 Australian penny, at first I thought I had a large cent or a token....I guess it is a LARGE cent, just not from the US mint..lol

great day of firsts for me, I made a video too, hope you enjoy it, thanks to Dan for taking me to a great spot to dig!

here is the video

Great finds! With a signal in the pull tab range, just goes to show you never know what you may dig up. Congratulations.

You hit the jackpot. Great finds. Congratulations. I wish I could find a silver 3 cent coin.

at old farms I ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS DIG PULL TAB SIGNALS!!

in the pulltab range at old farms I have dug:
fatty indians 12-23 range
flying eagle penny 12-23,24
1939 class ring 14-17
3 cent piece 12-24
many tokens, flat buttons, worn indians, coin spills MIXED with a nickel...........all these items come in this range!

Man ...great finds again
Quality stuff
That 3c is VERY nice indeed
1942 Kanga is a long way from home...my guess is a US serviceman took it home with him after WW2
And a nice old crotal bell too
great site/s you guys are hunting in and good skills to match it ;)

Well folks watch and listen...you are in for a treat and a lesson from a Master!

Congratulations on such great finds.

well today I did teach Dan about signals that where you hear the signal then it goes "ker-thunk"
kinda hard to explain in writing, all I can describe is you hear a QUICK high tone immeadiately followed by a thunk sound, I call it "Ker-thunk"

anyhow when I get these signals I have found either a very, very small item, or a coin standing completely on edge. I got this today with the 3 cent piece and I also got a 12-45..ker-thunk one way, then 10-46 ker-thunk the other way. So I called Dan over to let him hear it on his e-trac. he said that is junk, or deep iron. I said NO, that is a silver coin on edge.........and I told him to dig it and if it was silver, it was his to keep. Well what a shock to Dan when he dug down about 6" and there was a merc dime standing perfectly straight up and down.....I am a man of my word, he kept the dime. I said you dug it, you keep it!
He learned a valuable lesson as before this he was passing on signals like this!

Is the "ker-thunk" different than the thunk breaks I get at the end on clad coins? I was air testing silver dimes and quarters and comparing the sounds and VDI with clad, and noticed the clad make sound like that half the time.

That's awesome Terry! I can't congratulate you enough man!! Thanks for the story and the great pictures.

Awesome finds Terry, congrats! How old do you think that farm is?

Mike
well Dan and I was guessing maybe 1920s or so, if you see my video check it out. The foundation was not the real old brick or flagstone like a lot of 1800s homes in my area, it was more of a decorative cinder block type foundation

Very cool finds Terry !

A Three Cent piece is very near the top of my " want to find list " - a big congrat's on finding yours !

Hey Terry, awesome job. I think I know what your talking about as far as the ker-thunk at the tail end of a hit. Definately will pay more attention to that.

ive noticed that sound too....wierd. ill have to pay more attention. great find on your 3-center....thats on my bucket list as well.

you make me sick lol great hunt man. i missed my silver 3 cent years ago. had been hunting a construction site and an had a coin signal on the side of a dirt pile that had been scraped up. i dug in and then the coin was gone. i search that hole and dirt around it but it was gone. the next day i was there hunting again and a guy with a radio shack detector came up and said he had found a silver 3 cent. he showed me were to. about 2 feet down from the hole i dug on that big dirt mound. the coin had rolled down the hill when i dug it up and i didn't see it. he said it was on top the ground lol dang the luck but i didn't say nothing to him other than way to go good find. so yea I'm jealous haha.

You lucky dog good for you 3c is at the top of my list congrats
