Is beginners' luck really possible?

My Son is not into detecting but lives in an area with revolutionary and civil war battles. So, when I went to visit him, I took both D1 and D2 with me to NC.
We couldn't get into contact with the owner to detect a farm field that was near a battle, so we went to a sports field to do some jewelry hunting. I was using the D2, he the D1. I was explaining to my son what a good target sounds like when he got an 86 signal.
I knelt down to show him how to pinpoint and cut the plug and out pops a nice 925 silver ring. After I showed him how to replace the plug and seat it, he went his way and I went the another.
About 1/2 hr. later he walks over and showed me a 10k gold ring he found. I did find a silver earring with my eyes, but that doesn't count in my book as a detecting find.

When people ask me about metal detecting, I always ask them if they ever found a $20 bill ?? $10bil ?? There are people who just have anack for finding things,
Ive seen that many times in England, some guys just walk in the right direction. They are always finding veru cool stuff. Me, i have to wonder for days !!!! :):):)

Yes, I do believe in beginners lucks. Some people just step in it all the time !!!! They have that kind of radar !!!

You should go out with your sone more often, Better yet, take him to England !!!!

Nice stuff. Beginners luck? Absolutely! We took a friend hunting one day, first timer, and he finds a 3" Hotchkiss shell! Brother got a US buckle too. I only found bullets. A later hunt produced a Georgia state seal button for me! Good luck hunting.

That's really Cool.
Nice finds. Is he hooked ?
Love stories like that.

I think I want to be a beginner Again.
Young too.

Hi, I don’t think it’s beginners luck most of the time. When a beginner first starts off in this hobby, their swings are slower, they pretty much grid the areas they detect and have not acquired bad habits like the seasoned folks. Too often I see folks who have detected for years take on some really bad habits, swinging the coil like their golfing, walking really fast thinking they will cover more ground, swinging the coil like they are swatting flies or just detecting about 45 minutes with unrealistic expectations. If you do what everybody else does, you get the same results everybody else gets. Sometimes you just have to step back, reflect and reset.
Just my observation after 20 years of detecting.
TRIPL-SSS
PS, I was one of those folks with some bad habits that I picked up.

Decades ago I had a neighbor saw me loading a my new detector into my K5 Blazer and came over to chat.
I told him I was going detecting maybe a few hours and he wanted to tag along which I agreed.
Went to an old park I had been getting silver and wanted to try the back edge.
He just walked along watching me detect pulling more silver and misc.
After a couple hours it looked like rain was about to hit so we started heading back.
On the way back I thought about a quick hit at a tot lot and he gave me the first hint of trying detecting.
Within a few minutes he got a gold ring next to the swings. Then a couple coins & junk then then another ring that might be diamond - wow!
Then it started to sprinkle to we headed out to go home.
I thought he was hooked and I would have a neighbor detecting partner.
I later asked about going again but he was not interested - he said he only wanted to tag along before because he been fighting with his wife.
I asked about the 2 rings he had found and he said he had threw them in the trash some time ago - guess he was not interested.
I'm glad he didn't want to try salmon fishing with me

Need to get him fighting with the wife more often. 😁

I don't think so...not if he's just going to be throwing away gold rings!!!
That really doesn't make sense.
Unless he's afraid his wife will think it's another woman's.

There's an idea.
Leave a woman's ring laying around at his house.
Get em fighting again and take him detecting.
When he finds the rings keep em.
Tell him you're just going to throw them away anyway.

Need to get him fighting with the wife more often. 😁
Long story short: Came home from work one day and cops all over - I couldn't park on my driveway.
I guess he got into it with the wife again and she beat daylights out of him, dragged him outside, beat him some more then threw him in the bushes - neighbor kids saw it.
She got arrested and he got emergency room and hospital recovery time.
I knew she had an arm as I have watched her pitch on a softball league a few times. And she was a construction worker.
I was floored how she could wind up that arm and the launch speed of that ball.
