Yesterday was the big HOEDOWN at VBC. Village Bible Church is our new church we started going to a couple of months ago. Some people there ask if we were coming to the "hoedown" and we didn't quite know how to take it. They said the men would be having a cake baking contest, so I decided that I would enter.
After Arkie and I decided that I was going to bake a cake that was supposed to look like the opening scenes of BONANZA, I put my plan in to action.(This Hoedown was a BONANZA theme)I decided that one sheet cake wasn't large enough so I baked two cakes and put them side by side.
After talking to Arkie's wife and Sunny, my confidence was up. I was going to win that contest. I copyed a picture of the Ponderosa off of the computer, bought all the necessary ingredients,($30 worth of stuff) and went to work. I took a recipe out of a local church cookbook and went to work. I wanted to save a little work so I used canned icing.
After staying up after 10 pm to finish it, I was done in about 3 hours and 15 minutes. Last night I entered the 28th cake of the contest. We had a bar-b-que supper and were dismissed into the santuary for the winners.Carol told me that while she was in the restroom that there was 3 or 4 ladies in there with her. One of them said,"Thats her. Thats his wife." It seems as though they had saw my cake and liked it.
Carol and my eyes met with the look of a sure winner, a confident look as the numbers were announced. I was a shoe in!.....and third place goes to number fifteen....our eyes met again for each other's reenforced look.....second place goes to number twenty three......My heart was racing as I knew the judgw was about to call my name....and the WINNER is......number twenty........SIX. WHAT!!!! You must have made a mistake! I want a recount! this contest is rigged! Maybe you have to be a member of this congregation to win!-----all these thoughts ran through my head. I was devastated!
So, I didn't win. It was only just a cake and besides that, it was all for the fellowship, right? It was a lot of fun, but I promise it will be a LONG time before I decorate another one. Enjoy the picture!
