Back on Oct 11th, I was out hunting with my buds in a local park. We all hunted together for a while then I started off down the hill. The other two laughed at me saying that I wasn't going to find anything down there but new coins. I didn't care as I figured that considering the age of the place and history, I had just as much a chance down there as anywhere else. I was on the down slope of a hill when I got a peeper... read 28 or so. Dug down 4 inches and hit a huge root:thumbdown:. went to the side a bit and finally got under to pull a nice rosie out! :clapping: I'll show those two for making fun of me! I then headed east about 20 or 30 ft and got a juicy repeating signal that read 00-29. The depth meter was almost buried. Now I'm thinking 00-29 and deep...hmmmmm SILVER QUARTER! :super: Down I go to cut a big plug and pull 6 or 8 inches of dirt out. Used the X-1 and 00-29 signal still in the hole. Kept digging and piling the dirt on top the plug and then it happened....at somewhere between 10 and 12 inches down, a clod of dirt lays in the bottom of the hole with a silver rim sticking right in the middle. I mean a REALLY BIG silver rim. :yikes: Now I'm thinking. ooh weeee, I hit a Morgan or Peace baybee!!! :yo: I carefully pulled the clod up and eased the dirt away to reveal a coin that I didn't recognize. It said Republica Mexicana so I immediately thought of CHEAP MEXICAN JUNK!!! Then I saw the date...1831 and I knew I better call my buddies over to take a look. Now I know nothing about mexican coins but I now realize that having a world coin book MIGHT be beneficial in situations like this. My buddy takes a picture of the coin so he can look the thing up. He called me the next day and told me that I probably ought to have the coin appraised and certified as genuine which I did promptly. It turned out that the cheap mexican junk coin was actually an 8 Reale (Piece of :geek: minted in 1831 ( the first year of that mint) at the Chihuahua mint. My coin came back to me a week later in an EF45 grade with a book value of around $2000! :surprised: I practically paid for my detector in one hit...That'll teach those two to laugh at me!:heh: Duane

That's an AWESOME find N2Treasure! It's in fantastic condition. I bet your buddies went and worked that area over pretty well after that find. You should send a Pic into W&E Treasure Magazine for Best Finds. Congrats on a SWEET COIN!:clapping: Better lock that one up for sure. I bet your buddies won't be laughing anytime soon at you, that's for sure. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you.

Boy what a gift that was when it came back slabbed. That is one nice large foreign coin and sure looks good in the case. Nice find and wouldn't it be great to find a couple more of them around there which I'm sure you have already been back. Way to go Duane the detail is absolutely outstanding!!!!!!!!! HH John

What a great find N2Treasure.:super: I bet we all wish that we could find one single coin that would pay for our detectors. I found a ladies diamond ring that paid for my XS. Not a neat coin like you found, but once in awhile a nice ring will pay for your machine as well. Like James said, your buds won't be razing you now. Good luck on your next outing and HH.

Eddie

Thanks niterider. It's really all luck but I'd rather be lucky than good anyday! Duane

Thanks Eddie...I feel like this gave me the confidence boost that I sorely needed,,,,Duane

I have also since learned all I can about these type of coins and just how big a following they really do have. It's a little bit of skill and a WHOLE LOT OF LUCK! If I wasn't hooked on this hobby before, I'm hooked for sure now! GOD I LOVE THIS HOBBY!!!!!!!! Duane

I hit that area HARD for 2 weekends after that. To no avail I might add. Its funny too, my buddies were standing right near the spot talking about the find and shaking their heads when I got yet ANOTHER signal about 10ft away from them. Pulled a barber dime and V nickel in the same hole right in front of their smack talking faces! HAHA I was on fire that day!

Cheers! Duane

Like I have seen on hear before,"you never know what you are going to find under the coil" I remember your initial post when you found this coin. What a score! A find like that can keep you going for at long, long time. Congrats :super:

PS) I bet your 2 friends who laughed at you feel like hanging themselves, heehee.

It's $2,000 USA dollars and that's good enough for me. The design is cool too.

Great find for sure, one of the best I've ever seen, it's been a long time since that coin saw daylight. What kind of detectors are your pals using? Congratulations on one of the best detecting finds of the year!

Wow Duane - that's a beauty! It's historic, came out of the ground in great condition and is a wonderful addition for your collection. You will always have a fun story associated with this find and every time you show it to someone or just take it out to admire it, you'll think of your laughing buddies and smile. Nice job!
