January Hunt/Search Coil Analysis

If this is global warming, I like it!

The weather here in Ohio was just too nice yesterday. I had to get out there and do some detecting and try out my new 6x8 SEF Butterfly coil. I took it to a place I've hunted many times and wanted to see if it would pull some keepers out of the ground. I did manage to find two Mercs. The signal on the second Merc was very "iffy." Initially I decided not to dig because it was so terrible. The numbers jumped all around and the ferrous number dropped to 34 - 35. Shoot, the signal even disappeared and reappeared. So I walked away. But then something told me to go back and dig. I'm glad I did.

Here are some pics and a video of the hunt. (Scroll down for an analysis of the stock Pro coil, the 15x12 SEF Butterfly coil & the 6x8 SEF Butterfly coil.)

Search Coil Analysis:

The signals on both of those dimes in the video were on the iffy side. I have hunted that same area repeatedly with the Pro coil and just once with the big 15x12. I have found a total of 18 silver dimes at this site. Here's the breakdown of what I found with each coil:

Stock Pro Coil: 15 silver dimes %81
15x12 SEF Coil: 1 silver dime %6
6x8 SEF Coil: 2 silver dimes %13

I think the above shows how great the stock Pro coil is. It found all but 3 of the silver dimes. I believe it could have found the dime the 15x12 found also. However I really don't know if the Pro coil would have found the two silver dimes the 6x8 coil found. I think it's safe to say it would not have hit on that second 1926 Merc. That signal was barely detected by the small coil. This information backs up Nick's claim that you don't need an extra search coil. The stock coil found %81 of the silver dimes.

I still enjoy having the two extra coils. It's a challenge to see if they can squeak a few more good finds out of heavily hunted areas. Happy Hunting!

I agree with you
i also have the 6x8 and the 4.5 x 7 coils but use the stock coil most of the time.
i find it has great separation

You will be surprised also if you go over an area one direction, and then start over at a 45 degree angle different than what you
originally looked.

What camera did you use. macro was good.

seemed to be way out there. I hunt in the coin mode most of the time and seems like I would have missed that dime. The reading seemed pretty unstable....Any thoughts why???????????

Dan

It would be interesting to know if you would have found most all those silver dimes by using only the 12x15 or the 6x8.

If this would reflect the appropriate percentages of usage the other 2 coils held up pretty well. I have only used the 15" WOT and the Pro Coil, the Pro Coil is hard pressed to be beaten.

Pro coil was used 98% of the time resulting in 83.3 % of 18 dimes (15 dimes)
12 x15 SEF was used 1% of the time resulting in .0555 % of 18 dimes (1 dime)
6x8 SEF was used 1% of the time resulting in .0111 % of 18 dimes (2 dimes)

Thanks for Sharing Dan and Happy Hunting

I have had similar readings and I did pass them up. Guess you need to dig em all.

Initially I thought it might be a coin on edge. But after watching the video I heard a "thunk" or "bonk" sound. So now I think that 1926 dime had iron in the hole with it. The signal sounded real nice after I lifted the plug back...so I think the iron was on top of the coin.

That's an excellent observation, Bill! I did use the Pro coil a lot more than the other two. I believe the other two coils, individually and used exclusively, would have found many of the silver dimes the Pro coil found. Usually I try to get all I can with the Pro coil over several hunts. Then I try another coil to see if it will squeak out a few more keepers.

Way to start the season Dan. Great video as usual too !! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks..They have a new one due out in April called a Play sport. Its waterproof.

I really don't know if it's waterproof. Unless someone else knows, I'll let you know after I find out.

The zi6 has the best macro around. I almost got the zi8 until I compared the macro side by side and the older model zi6 was better. Kodak seemes to be going bacwards in this area in the newer models.

Nice hunt Dan. Very iffy signals indeed. I noticed in pinpoint mode the target was well below your ferrous discriminate line. Makes perfect sense if there was iron above the coin. Your results will make me think twice before giving up on a signal with a high Ferrious #.

Thanks for sharing, its always helpful watching your videos Dan.

Very nice. I will be sure to dig all targets no matter how iffy from now on.

I agree with you about the coil. Thanks for the test though.
