Kicked out of my favorite park!!! :hot::rage:

The other day I was out at my favorite local park - Forest Park here in St. Louis - I had just dug an Indian Cent and stood up to find a young lady in overalls standing behind me...why do they have to "sneak up" from behind??? She looks at me, looks at my detector, looks at me and puts her hands on her hips and huffs out " You are killing the grass with that thing and I'm going to ask you to leave and not come back".

I was taken back, of course... I said "First of all, I'm not killing any grass (I'm hunting in a mudhole in a heavily used picnic area) and secondly I have a right to be here and enjoy my PERFECTLY LEGAL hobby".

She says "Every time you dig in the ground, the grass dies". I explained that I've been doing this hobby longer than she's been alive and I know how to retrieve objects without harming the "grass". She said she didn't care and that I was full of $hit and started ranting on about some BS when I interrupted her and asked
"On who's authority are you telling me to leave?" She didn't reply. I further stated "You dont make the rules out here, you dont enforce the rules out here, I pay taxes on this park and I'm damn well going to enjoy my PERFECTLY LEGAL hobby out here free of harrassment from you or anyone else."

She says, "So you are not going to leave?" I replied " Why should I? Who are you to tell me to leave?" She didn't reply, and turned around and left in a huff with her arms waving in the air... I called after her" I dont mean to be an a$$ about this, but your attitude leaves me no choice!" She mumbled something as she was walking away that I didn't hear.

 I shook my head and resumed detecting. 10 minutes later the real fun begins.... I look up and there are Park Ranger cars everywhere and rangers walking toward me from different directions.... :look: "Well this can't be good" I'm thinking. I was expecting her to call the police on me and had remained hunting in the same spot so that they would easily find me. I was looking forward to talking with them and straightening out this misunderstanding between the lady and me - a situation that I've been in many times in the past - each time ending with all parties satisfied that I'm doing no harm.

This time was different. First thing I notice is that every one has their hand on their guns and the lead fellow is screaming at the top of his lungs at me. I took off my headphones and asked "Can I help you officer?" His reply was a string of r-rated words and threats against me as he advanced right up to my face. Boy was he hopping mad!!! I have been confronted by law enforcement in this situation many more times than I care to relate but this individual, by far, had the worst, most threatening attitude towards me that I have ever seen. "I'm going to jail" was all I could think of at the moment.

I found out very quickly that the lady was a park employee, even though she never identified herself as such and had no uniform or identification on her. And that I was "Compelled to follow her directive to cease my destruction of private property and leave"   I explained that I wasn't doing anything destructive or illegal and that she never told me who she was or why she was harrassing me... This brought about a great amount of agitation from all the rangers... they started to unholster their guns, and one reached out and plucked my digger out of my hand - THINGS ARE GETTING INTERESTING!!!

The head ranger started to rant at me and threats of arrest and citations came out and.... At this point I was totally stunned by what was happening. I mean, seriously - what the he!! was wrong with these people???? I stopped saying anything except "yes sir" and "no sir" and after a few minutes the fellow calmed down and the other trigger happy rangers eased their hand off their weapons.

I explained who I was, what my hobby is, how long I've been doing it FREE OF HARRASSMENT AND WITH THE FULL KNOWLEDGE AND BLESSING OF THE PARK ADMINISTRATION AND THE MANY LAW ENFORCEMENT INDIVIDUALS WHO SEE ME OUT HERE - SOME OF WHOM I KNOW ON A FIRST NAME BASIS. He started in with the "destruction of city property" crap and how I commit it every time I put my digger in the ground. I wasn't going to argue such a subjective, inane point with him like that... I did get him calmed down and after a 30 minute discussion of my legitimate hobby and convincing him that I'm not a threat to his city property, and that I actually contribute to the property and it's upkeep with my tax dollars, my private donations to the park improvement fund, and my physical labor in removing trash and repairing divots in the ground left by animals, children or thoughtless detectorists.

I made it clear that many hobbyists enjoyed their right to hunt out there, and that I've held organized hunts out there with full knowledge of the park administration when they issue me permits to do so. I explained everything as best as I could... he basically told me that city police don't have any say out here - in the city park - and that the park rangers were the "authority" He said that the park rangers have been running other detectorists out in the past... (I never heard of such a thing - park rangers have seen me hunt out there countless times without any problem) I ran into a wall with him and we agreed that I needed to talk with the head park ranger about the situation.

So know I'm left wondering if I've seen my last day of hunting in Forest Park which has been my favorite haunt and much of my life the past 20+ years.
I will contact the head ranger and try to get this mess straightened out, if that doesn't work I'll go to the parks administrator... something I've had to do in the past. All this time everyone involved in the park system has been very kind and accepting of metal detectorists... I just hope their attitude or interpretation of a mis-applied ordinance doesn't change to intolerance. If they try to keep detectorists out of Forest Park, they will have a battle on their hands... from me especially.

Unfortunately the lady who approached me in the first place chose to confront me with her concern - something that she is not paid to do or authorized to do, much less try to enforce her interpretaion of a city ordinance. That is what the park rangers are for. Had she called them directly, without confronting me first, there would have been no conflict, and I would have been able to continue hunting. She must have embellished the threat I posed.... I am a big scary looking dude with a large knife in my hand.... she should feel lucky that I was a "good guy" and not a psychopath would have stabbed her to death right there on top of her beloved grass - Lord knows there are people like that running loose out there.

Hopefully sane minds will prevail and this "misunderstanding" will blow over.... but I got to wonder if I have to be paranoid of who's around me everytime I go out detecting or when I'm digging in the ground. I can't stand it when ignorant, prejudiced people jump to conclusions about me or my hobby and condemn me without even asking my name or what I'm doing.

Enough of my rant now.....will keep you informed.

Are wanna be cops who sit and watch shows on TV at night, dreaming about how someday they are going to finally do some type of police work. I wonder how many times those guys pacticed in front of a mirror pulling their gun out and yelling "Freeze". Fact is if ever anyone pointed a gun at them they would wet their pants like a little girl. If they won't let you detect there anymore it would be a shame, my guess is that the older senior ranger would say it's OK and tell these young park panzies to leave you alone.

i myself have run into those sanctimonious holier than tho individuals myself and i feel for ya man...i had the rangers called on me by a lady who ALSO detects the same park hahaha i guess she figured i was competition or somethin.....lol

see if we could meet up there as we did a couple of times before. Heck...I joined our detecting club because of you and GOLDDIGGER...and Forest Park is where we held our first get together. Wouldn't that have been a pretty site to run off a bunch of roughnecks at our club picnic.... like my girlfriend and her 12 year old little boy who I'm trying to get interested in the hobby?? I usually hunt there while my lady and her son go to the zoo. Holy crap..with all the garbage and crazy things going on around the country...do they not have anything better to do than bother people trying to enjoy this peaceful hobby. Please let me know what you find out...as I'd hate for my lady's little boy to have a gun drawn on him while I'm teaching him how to use his Ace 250!!!???

Mike ! What the Heck I leave town and you Loose control of OUR Parks??????
That is a LOAD OF BUNK!!!!!!
Man if we let them start there they will close ALL of the St.Louis Parks .
SORRY you had to put up with that type of Hassle ! Hey you think it was the same Lady that we Met at the Oldest Park in town that one afternoon that said your Knife would probably get you arrested?????
Good luck and keep in touch Let me know if we need to round up some guys and get this taken care of !!!
I know a couple of people in the Forest Park forever Bunch that may be able to help us out !
H.H. (GOLDDIGGER) J.W.

Well Mike, glad to see you stood your ground. It's getting worse everywhere. The more Detectorists the more problems. I think it's a matter of misunderstanding what and how we do our hobby. Hope things work out OK for you as this progresses.

Sorry to hear about that Mike. Some people are worried way too much about what someone else is doing. If you are not bothering other people, people should not bother you. I'm sure you will get this straightened out if you 've had this problem before.
JDD

Hey long time no hear!!! I was beginning to wonder if you were still alive  I found out later she works for Forest Park Forever... she was very opinionated - some might have called her a neo-nazi treehugger... but not me ;) We'll see what happens. Take care, MM.

...and they just want the whole park to themselves!

don't let the b@st@rds grind you down, mike!

I failed to mention that the ranger DID apologize to me about the misunderstanding and his behavior - it was still over the top in my opinion... anyway my beef isn't with him it's with the interpretation of the city ordinance and the previous understanding between us detectorists and park officials coming under jeopardy.... that is what I have to get straightened out. HH, MIke.

Again this shows the importance of properly covering a hole... I hit a local park last summer where it was obvious that it was not a furry animal but an animal with a detector that had left several plugs improperly filled...some of the holes were left wide open with cents still giving a signal...like they dug then realized it was a penny and just walked away... spent half an hour walking around filling holes and left...not sure I will go back there...this person ruined my day and probably across the country people like this are ruining it for all of us....

In your case... I would maybe take a few photos of a before and after recovery showing whoever runs the park that you leave the ground in the same condition it is found....I have a feeling this lady might have been running people out of the park because of what she was seeing... but maybe talking to the director of the park you can work around it.... Otherwise I know its your favorite park...but hopefully there are more near you. I have over 500 parks in my city good luck Mike.... and thanks for the warm welcome to the forum in the private message....Gregg.

That happened to me last year. I actually got permission from the head of the parks department to metal detect in any of the parks in the county I live in. While starting metal detecting at a local park I was approached by a woman who stated she was a secretary working for the park department and asked me if I had permission. (Note: I hadn't even started yet) I stated to her that I did and showed her the signed document stating just that. She was not satisfied, and said that she should have been notified. I showed her the signature of the head of the parks department , but she wanted to verify it by calling the main office. I again stated to her I had permission from the head of the parks department and that there shouldn't be any problem. Note: I was very calm during our conversation that lasted about 2 minutes. I started detecting, only to get a call from the head of the parks department on my cell phone stating that he was told by her, that I was "rude" to her, and that he had decided to ban metal detecting at all parks in the county. This is just to show you that sometime no matter what you do you can end up with this kind of ridiculous outcome.

I bet that woman is proud of her role in preventing the wanton destruction of HER precious county property... when public policy is based on something like that, you know how screwed up government is. 'Nuf said!

All I have got to say is I have been ranting a raving about this same thing it seems the past year....GOOD FOR YOU!!!!I tell ya that woman needs a what for right out of her stinking job.....Thanks Mike....now you got me all worked up again.....arrrrgggggg I cannot stand these ignorant people and just cause they have no clue about the fun and relaxation of detecting and the good we do when we remove harmful ammunition and sharp objects from the ground....etc etc...My biggest peeve is you know what...mother nature will take care of her grass......but when people buy land and disreguard the grounds of the past and bulldoze it without removing the artifacts first.....History lost again......then they pour tons of concrete and toxic petrolium products all over it and call it a friggen drive way......SEE.....I am ranting again......it is so hard to type what I feel cause it never comes out right.....but I know what I want to say.....swear words galore I might add.....I love this hobby and it is all I have left to enjoy......and they want to destroy it with.....Hey....I am the boss here and you do as I say or you will be arrested!!!!......I got to go......Now I am really getting PO'ED...........but Good for you for sticking up for yourself!!!!Bravo Mate! :super: Rock ON!

Hard to get around that one, though showing the use of surgical tools (long forceps and the such) seems to suggest that you are not digging any holes and a real minimalist in your recovery procedure( tell them you use well practiced, non intrusive key hole surgery) which you can but does take a little practice to perfect. It will take all the wind out of their "sails" in this argument). Then they might slam you with and "interfering with the soil" bullsh?T.

Very surprised you can call this woman a "lady" at all.....sounds to me like she ain't. I've got to "better" words to describe her. Sneaking up from behind like that and not at least introducing herself for who she is, shows her lack of experience or her bravado(knowing that she can pull her weight with the expectant backup she's about to call) hence her provoking and confrontational approach. Sounds more like what a pack of dogs do.

This ordeal would have put me off detecting. I shouldn't and I hope you get around to convincing the "authority" that in actual fact your digging activity, IF it were as overly done as they suggest it were, is relieving the more NOT so obvious problem of "root " compaction that occurs in trafficked grassed areas and is assisting in grass regeneration. You might want to discuss this with some intelligent head gardeners at some parks who will agree wholeheartedly and verify this fact. There are even machines designed to to this, like vertical mowers and spike aerators that are used on many parks around here. If that's not "damaging" a grassed then we are we are all living in "lala" land.

Does sound like a system gone mad and as always, it's easier for them to say NO, pull a gun on you and paint you with the same tar brush, rather than reason with ya. The park rangers getting ready and un-holstering their firearms is bizarre to say the least.
Did you happen to look around at all at the outer lying high spots around you.Who knows you might have noticed the back up SWAT team with their long range rifles trained on you.(you know flashes in the distance and tell tale laser spots on your chest):surrender:

Take care

David Di

Somebody needs to ruin HER life by taking away what she enjoys doing......I just Hope Hillary will not become Commander-N-Chief......We will have rules in war engagement....like don't get your knees all dirty and if you destroy the grass there will be jail time for all of you!......Have a nice hot cup of STFU! thats what she should of had that day! When the Big Meteroite hits this planet and they are all gone.......I hope the rangers hold the Martians accountable for it!!......can you imagine what its going to take to repair all this grass............hope we don't have a drought.......the grass will burn and mother nature will have to work overtime to fix it.......time to raise the taxes just to pay mother nature......funny how she always comes thru though......there is a really big problem with this world and I hope someday God will forgive us.........I knew this thread was gonna get me going again.....sorry if I ramble on........but something needs to change......

Part of this bad situation is easy to understand...

The female obviously felt that any more than enjoying the sunshine and watching birds flit about was abuse of public property.
I'd imagine it was a bad day for her from the start.
There was no winning THAT confrontation... no way, no how.
My guess is she's like the one that drove her car full of kids into the lake.

She bustled off, flustered, and told Rangers of her confrontation with an armed man.

If she was indeed known to them, they responded as anyone may expect a force protecting their own.
(I'm fully aware it is recognized far and wide as an excellent tool for low impact plug/flap recovery, but I have issues with the Lesche.)

It is very fortunate you are cool-headed enough to deal with adversity, calmly.
Obviously it helped.
You were not shot at the scene.

May I point out, within our system, the place where accusations and allegations are dealt with is the court system where evidence is presented before a judge, and possibly a jury, along with a hopefully valid defense.

It may have been good to advise the head ranger present, that you were peacefully enjoying your recreation time in the park, and demanding that he either cite you for a specific violation or leave you in peace.

It is ever distressing that citizens entitled to all rights should need to humble themselves before officers of the law.

...and I am NOT one to carry a 'permission slip' from a public servant to do that which I am entitled, anyway.
That only promotes their status as a minor warlord of some sort... phooey!

This might be the best of times to get your local clubs involved.
