My brother and I detected a field that I first hunted back in the early 1980's. For the past 25+ years, the (former) owner did not allow anyone on the premises. It changed hands and I got permission for us to hunt today. The field has been farmed for the better part of 100 years. So don't blame me for the crud and scuff marks on the coins! Blame the guy with the fertilizer and farm implements!

These are the coins that I found. The Seated dime is an 1856-O, the Barber dimes are a 1900, a 1902-O, and a 1906. The Barber Quarter is a 1908-D. The V-nickel is a 1903. And the other nickel is a Shield, but unreadable. I know it is a Shield because it has a smaller diameter than the V-nickel. Three of the pennies are IH cents and the other three are Wheats. I won't know the dates on them until I soak them for awhile and brush them off. I also dug a bizzilion 22 cartridge casings that read just like a nickel. It got to the point late in the day that I just concentrated on conductive readings higher than 26. It was a great day to be outside and even better when you can dig old coins. Once I get the silver rinsed off and the IH cents cleaned up a bit, I'll post another pic. Thanks for looking. HH Randy

Very nice finds.
Congrats!

Great job Randy - what a great day you had there !

Great finds!!! I'm glad no one else got in there the last 25 years. I'll bet that was tough, just knowing what lay hidden under the surface!

I rinsed the silver in water and brushed them with a soft rubber eraser. The O2 is in great condition. The 06 and quarter are pretty nice. The Seated is well worn. And the 1900 is really worn. The pennies need more time in the olive oil, but I can see the dates. 1890, 1902 and 1903 IH. Wheats are a 1910, 1911 and I think a 1909. As most old nickels from around here, they're way past having anything done to them. But the V is a 1903. And the Shield is just another Shield.

Didn't get out today as we went to watch our grandson's hockey games. Hope to get out tomorrow afternoon for a couple hours. Not many more nice days left, I don't imagine. HH Randy

That is a great day Digger, Looks like you found a great diggin spot as well. Somethng about those nickles that I just love...especially the shield. I have just a few and think that old vintage look is just cooool.

I won't say no one else hunted it during the past 25+ years. All I can say is that I didn't. I use to visit with the guy who farmed it every couple years, just to see if he had changed his mind. (hoping to wear him down!). He never did. But he told me that he had given several other guys "the boot" when he caught them in there. I'm just glad they didn't find them all. Of course, I don't think anyone ever does! However, I'm going to try! JMHO HH Randy
