minelab CTX 3030 underwater headphones

Boy, you sure opened up a can of worms........

I use the stock underwater phones without incident, note also that I don't do a lot of water hunting either, if I did, I might consider one of the others available, but so far so good with the "big birds".

For Valentines day my wife bought me a set of the Gray Ghost underwater headphones ( yep she's a keeper ) and I have been iching to try them on a real hunt . Last weekend it was very cold and I could not go, but this weekend is going to be warmer so I cant wait to try them . I have tried them around the yard briefly and they seem to work ok. On the down side I have hearing problems so my results my be different than some one else .

I got the grey ghost and used them a bit on a recent trip to Florida.

Overall they are well built and the connector fits nice. The fit on the head and ears is better than the Yellow's which I have on my Excal. Only complaint is the volume level. Definitely lower than the stock land phones. I had to dial up the threshold quite a bit to hear it with these phones over the surf. This has been commented on before and I believe there is a volume limiter in them that can be removed. Which is a mod that would void the warranty so I'll run them this way till the warranty is out.

Didn't give them the full dunk yet.

The stock waterproof headphones are not the best. I use the gray ghost myself - much more comfortable.

My stock waterproof headphones were bad right out of the bag. Only one side worked and volume was horrible. I called mine lab and was told they will warranty them but they are on back order and have no time of when they will be available (really lousy). Minelab must have problems with them if they dont have any and on backorder.
I bought some grey ghosts and problem solved.

I have used the yellows on the Excalibur's for several years, they are piezo driven and have the best audio that can expected for now. In the last 6 months I have repaired several Excalibur's with HP issues. The
problem, wires cracking, leakage into the coiled wire, then this causes corrosion and a low, to no audio. I don't like to say this but the quality of the yellows is medium grade, all issues being the coiled wire and poor ambient db rating. The audio for the yellows is quite good for what is offered, being the GGUW the only other set. The GGUW's are much better quality and db blocking abilities, but the audio is poor as far as I'm concerned. Many a Excalibur GGUW user have complained about this, being the Excalibur and now the 3030 are tonal based. As far as the GGUW holding up to the conditions, they are superior and will last for many years. Of resent I have retired and been working on this issue concerning audio and durability for the Excalibur. After a few months of testing I've came up with UWHP's using speakers that the best land headphones use, audiosears 2463's and kobitones 500's. Speakers offer much better audio, tonal target separation, better depth perception on targets, and louder audio. I'll be doing a video in a month on how to build your own Speakered headphones 100% waterproof, Skullies. In fact I'll be looking for a tester come spring, but I need someone that hunts several times aweek, saltwater please.

the yellow minelab ones are uncomfortable for me and also slip around on my noggin easily
I think the underwater the gray ghosts'are the bee's knees

After a 6 hour hunt with GG uw headphones I came away with mixed feelings. As I mentioned in my previous post that I have hearing problems and they are severe. I am totally deaf in one ear and only have about 30% hearing left in the other. The reason I am stating this is my results may not be usable for someone else so here goes. The first thing that I really noticed was that the higher pitched sounds were louder than the lower pitched sounds. With my damaged hearing it was very pronounced and almost to the point of being irritating but some may find it great because silver really screams. I really liked the fit and feel of the headphones. They were snug without thinking that you had your head in a vise. There were comfortable and would be great for all day hunts. It was a cool day so I not sure if they would sweat your ears on a hot day. I wish the cord was just a bit longer because it would tug on the headphones when you lay the detector down. Another concern I had was since they are waterproof they have a different connector which exits the detector straight out instead of a 90 degree like most headphones. Where the cord leaves the connector it bends the wire excessively and I think with regular use might be a failure point. So overall I would say that on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best. I would personally rate these at 7. I will keep these headphones and use them in the water as summer is coming. My review may not be fair because these are intended to be used underwater and I was land hunting.

I have a pair of the GG water proof headphones. I like how they fit which makes them very comfortable. The only complaint is the volume. It seems low. I have my volume limit maxed and my gain maxed and the sound still seems a bit low. There was a post about 3 months ago about the low volume of the GG headphones, and a solution on how to boost the volume up. Does anybody remember that post and the solution? If so, would you re-post the solution. Thanks.

It was Mine, Been work on Underwater headphones for about 5 years now, the weak leak to UWDetectors. Skullies UW's are the answer, same speakers as the Sunray Pro Golds, Killer bees and the ratphones..........audiosears 2463, or the kobitones 25c-500, just doing 10 sets this year, all are sold...some will be used by divers....one diggingrings has two sets.

Just a update on the CTX GGUW headphones and the video above, wanted to post this after I had modified a set of GGUW for a CTX hunter. The little Coil is needed for the CTX since the audio is AC current.

WOW. I agree 100% with what you have to say about the waterproof GGs. Low tones are lower and high tones are much higher in sound. Overall, the GGs are much lower in sound than the standard Minelab phones that come with the CTX 3030. [But if I had to choose, I'd still get the GGs.] Also, I've used the Gray Ghost headphones for a total of 200 hrs and they failed at the connector/jack as you suggested. I'm currently sending them in for repair. In the meantime I'll use the standard phones for dry sand work but looking for another pair of waterproof phones until the GGs return. Really not many waterproof options out there...
