MINELAB EXPLORER LIGHTWEIGHT COIL

D&P-OR

Well-known member
I guess everybody (including me) is giving some thought to that new EX lightweight coil that Minelab is coming out with. I keep having a question about it-maybe you can humour me. (Minelab is probably waiting for some character like me to ask this). As I look at the picture of the coil---will dirt/mud/mineralized sand get up into and stuck into those slotted out cross pieces and the routed out center? Will that cause a problem with falsing/weight/balance? (especially for beach hunters) We don't all hunt in perfect conditions. Leave it up to me to come up with a question like this-but it's something to think about. From the picture, it looks like (especially the slots in those cross pieces) would be a pain to keep cleaned out from packed dirt & sand. Go ahead, tell me----just stay in the grass, dummy. HA Seriously: not trying to discourage anyone on that coil-I just have that question about it and I do think it's a legitimate question to ask. Later, Del

Tests in the UK GAVE IT, 1/2" better than the stock coil in depth ,not a lot for a coil they are saying took 2 years to develop. test were done by a member of the Minelab owners forum UK, and a lot of posts are suddenly coming on here lately from that forum about the coil ,lets have more tests from other members of this forum, before I make up my mind ,

When I saw the bottom of the coil my first thoughts were why didn't they omit those center indentations in the coil cover - Then it hit me that nobody would be able to see the indentations... I think it would actually take a tiny bit more material to make the coil cover with indentations than it would without. So that only leaves me thinking that it was a marketing decision rather than a functional one. I hope it is a great coil but as you said... aren't those holes going to get full of mud and defeat the weight savings? I am not so worried about the crosspieces which are further off the ground.

Last I checked there wasn't much for follow-ups, which I keep looking for.

A UK test that won't really help US users as the items tested are items we find here... the 5p is similar to your Dime.
Also I'm not sure when you will get the excellent Detech SEF coils we have.

Thats a decent increase......Maybe with a little patience, and dampness 1" more and thats 10%..healthy increase.

yes a 5% increase but they are using for these tests, all metal wide open ,hardly your normal settings ,or what most would use, reading between the lines pushing the detector to its limits when in most cases unusable for the user.

a mistake in my post using nails only not all metal , and also it is easy to detect a target ,if you know it is already there ,lets have some data from minelab on depth not someones back garden and the soil they have ,it may not work the same else were I still will be purchasing the new coil to find out for myself ,good hunting

Thats a truth...ideal situations in a controled atmosphere...No minerals, no iron, no nothing except good clean processed dirt.......But it sure sounds good doesn't it...Just think thats about twenty five years deeper in most places...So you go from mercs to Barbers and maybe even seated....

WINDOWS ?????

Heck, when did that come out ???

I'm still using DOS...

No wonder I can't see them pictures !

Didnt the new Whites coil for the DFX and MXT make a larger depth difference for their equipment? When i look at depth, a 1/2" for one of the experts may equate to 2" for the average Joe, thats an improvement in my book. So ill wait to see how the average Joe rates the coil. Thats the true test.

I personally don't feel 1/2" will make any difference. Unless your coil is flat on the ground all the time.
I am getting the new coil for the weight and balance plus I'm hoping for more stability.
If I hunt with the 8" or the FBS1050, they are stable. Put on the slimline and the friction of the grass causes high pitched falsing. Wet grass and stubble the same thing.

Good posts dewcon 4414 & NH Bob---We have used the DFX for 6 years and I never did like that stock coil. When we ran the DFX, we used the 5" X 10" till White's came out with that 12" coil and yes, it has made a tremendous depth difference with the DFX both in my tests and in field use. Of course it's not the coil you want to use in ALL applications. I know I'm on a Explorer forum but we are talking about coil comparisons here so I hope it's O.K. saying the above. Bob---I think you hit the nail on the head about the new lightweight coil. More than increased depth, it looks like it's going to be all about weight/balance and I HOPE stability-but the way it's built, I dunno about the stability part-we shall see. That FBS 1050 is a hard act to follow by ANY coil! Sounds like the guys in the U.K. tested it in AM with VERY experienced operators "straining their ears" to achieve that 1/2" depth difference.
I know one thing---I'm not switching out of my 1050 just for that. Later, Del
