Monroe Dollar Coins ?

Retired Digger

New member
I apologize up front if this is not the proper place to post this message. I stopped by the bank today and they had two rolls of uncirculated gold finished Monroe Dollar coins. I know that they are not popular, but I read somewhere that the government was going to recall them. Does anyone think they will become collectible? I appreciate any and all comments.

I did find a 1922 silver dollar this year with the AT Pro. I also found 17 rings( 3 gold, 5 junk, 9 silver) and about $170 in modern coins. Hope 2012 is as good as this year.

Happy new year and hunting to all.

Bob

I don't think they are recalling them, they just aren't going to make any more. Seems that have about $1.6 billion worth of them lying around the mint that have never shipped anywhere. If they had any sense, they would quit printing bills and start circulating more $1 coins as the coins are more cost effective to produce. But that would make sense, right??

Thanks for clearing me up on the production status of the dollar coins. I would like to the government quit printing dollar bills and to put the coins into circulation, but as you say that would make too much sense. Wouldn't want the government start a new trend.

Some of those presidential dollar coins have some mint errors like no printing on the edge of the coins and stuff like that or double strikes.
The book: Strike it rich with pocket change" has several examples. I wish they would do away with the dollar bills, also. More dollar coins for us to find. Sounds like you've had a great year and I hope and pray 2012 brings success to everyone on these different forums.
The book I mentioned will pay for itself with just one of the lower priced mint errors, just like some of the more expert metal detector members have with their metal detectors. HH

The average life of a $1 bill is less than six months and the average life of a coin is probably close to 20 years. Do the math. I don't know if they still offer tours of the govt printing office where they print the currency, but I took a tour many years ago and was awed by sheet after sheet of bills coming off the press. I never understood how you can work in a place like that day after day and then stop by the grocery store and worry about the price of coffee and hamburger!!

I think they'll be melted down eventually, just like the susan b anthony $1 coins. I keep the ones I come across. they will gain in value(I hope)

I can't help but think that as Biden was announcing the end of the presidential dollar coin the people of the company that makes the paper for the dollar bills were smiling nearby. If anything, the paper company probably plays a good sized part in what has happened with dollar coins over the years.

Yes I would like to see the paper money disappear, but really, who wants to carry all that heavy coin in your pocket anyway. Think about it!

If they want the coins to be used, they have to do what they did in Canada and Europe...Stop printing and circulating the paper bills, and push the coins on people...otherwise they will NEVER be used...I would like to see the dollar coins used insted of dollar bills...means more to find with my detector!!!

HH,

In Australia the 2$ coin is smaller than the 1$ coin, it is well liked.

I don't recall ever carrying around 20 $1 bills at one time, so why would I carry 20 $1 coins? Maybe I would carry 5 $1, but that is not that unreasonable.

I got very excited the other night and thought I had an error coin worth $200.00 to $500.00 dollars, but it was my mistake. The 2000 Sacawega dollar with the P mint mark had an error on the reverse side worth 200 if circulated and 500 if uncirculated. I was hollering like a Rooster who just discovered the Hens, but then I realized the coin I have has no mint mark and was not an error coin. I was the error, ha.ha.
It would have been a great find if it had been the error coin in question. Live and learn and die and forget it all. Happy New Year everybody and happy hunting. If the Eagle is at the top when you flip the coin from the obverse to the reverse, that's normal. If it's at the bottom, it's the mint error coin, if it has the P mint mark. Hope some of y'all find one.
I have quite a large amount of change in quart jars, mostly pennies and some other change I intend to go thru as soon as I get one of those microscopes you hook up to the computer and look at on the screen. The other magnifiers I have just seem to cause me a lot of eye strain.
Once I roll all this change up and turn it in to the bank, I intend to start buying some change and going thru it on a regular basis. In 2007, someone found a penny worth $126,000 in a roll of pennies from the bank and another worth quite a bit, but not as much as the first penny.
The PC microscope and a good jeweler's scale are on my list for the new year and later on one of those coin cleaning machines and 2 new digital cameras. One camera for regular use and one to be converted to a compact digital infrared camera. Santa has his work cut out for him and his elves next year. lol While he's at it, maybe he can get me one of those remote controlled model helicopters or airplane to take some video or photos from the air looking for areas that will show up with aerial photos and video, especially infrared.
