More Silver

Another day....another silver...oh and another silver. Had my first two silver day. Was such a beautiful day I called my wife and told her I was going to hunt for 1 1/2 hrs till she had to leave for her class. Went to a local park and struck silver....twice. Both silvers were in the hole with iron. One silver had two nails in the hole and the other silver had only one nail. I'm starting to get the hang of this machine and I'm loving the quick mask. My silver count is up to 12 now....but more importantly it is up 3 in two days...lol. I found a 1942 Merc and a 1944 Merc both are plain and in great shape. I'm getting pretty excited about things now, considering one was 5 inches and the other was 6-7 inches.

Nice going on the silver you are on a roll. Will we see 3 on the next post? Congrats -- Randy

Great finds! Welcome to the wonderful world of the Etrac. You are discovering what it does best.

I will relate a quick story. Before I got my Etrac in February I was using a Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300. I was hunting along side of a friend (and current hunting partner) who was using an Etrac. I had seen him pull the coins out when my detector wouldn't even see them. Shortly before purchasing the Etrac I watched a video on YouTube where a guy demonstrated with the BH 3300 how nails and other iron screwed it up bad. He took a clad quarter and placed it on a board over a clear spot of ground. He then took a nail and placed it a couple inches from the quarter and ran the coil over it. The BH never saw the quarter. He kept moving the quarter away until finally the detector picked up the coin. It was almost 18 inches away before it ever saw the quarter.

I have dug countless clad coins and quite a few silver with nails and screws being with an few inches or less of the coins in the hole. Many of those times I still had a strong signal from the coin. I know a lot folks may jump on me for saying this but I would bet you could take the top 10 non Minelabs detectors out there and run them over these same targets and they wouldn't even see them where with the Etrac it is pretty obvious that it is a dig target.

Anyways my point is you will see that this is a fairly normal thing with the Etrac. It loves to find those hard targets burried with rusty iron!

might i ask....what mode was you running when you found the mercs? what were your co and fer numbers? were the signals mixed and what made you dig them? over all nice finds! thanks j.b.

Awesome finds!

Would you mind telling me how you have your quickmask setup, when you use it (mixed signals?) and what results you get when you run quickmask versus non? Also, are you hunting in TTF or a custom/coin mode? I am new to etrac and have mostly been using TTF as I learn the machine. I have not been able to figure out how to use quickmask effectively, even after reading andy's book, and would love to hear your experience since it is obviously producing nice coins!

Congrats again on the nice finds.

I'm running the stock coin program right now. Deep on, Fast on. Auto sens +3 with conductive tones ( have not tried TTF yet). Pretty much as basic as it gets. The quickmask is simply wide open...it is basically all metal mode. I've only had the E-Trac for about 2 weeks...but have learned how to use it pretty quickly after some initial shock and learning pains...lol. The initial readings were 12-43 but kept nulling out, which is a sign of iron. I switch to quick mask to confirm that there is iron in the hole, but more importantly that there is also good signal too. If I get a consistent good number such as 12-43 I dig. I look for a 50/50 split in the good and bad numbers. So far I'm 3 for 3 in my digs using the quick mask to cut through the iron. I'm working a park that is literally hunted daily. I've yet to have a pure silver signal and really don't expect any, so I'm always listening for that combination of sounds....good beep then a null.

Congratulations on the silver Dan! Thanks for the pictures.

Are you trying to say that the mercs came up as clad dimes or pennies at 12-43? And it was because there were nails near them? I don't think I have ever dug a wheat or silver coin that wasn't near a nail, and the mercs are always 12-44, rosies 12-46, the 12-43s are usually a clad dimes or memorials. Memorials come in 12-40 through 12-44, and I get sick of them after about 30-40 in a day.

Silver dimes come up as 12-43 or 12-44 on my machine, regardless of what is near them. I'm just stating that the E-Trac has proven to be very good at cutting through the crap to see the good stuff. Merc's and Rosies come up as the same numbers on my machine. Wheaties and copper pennies come up as 12-42.

I might add one thing. I have a very complex coin garden planted in my back yard. These coins have been in the ground for more than 3 years now. It started as a mistake because I did not clean out the iron trash before burring the coins. Well anyway several of the coins will read from 15-20 ferrous and 43-48 conductive with quick mask. I've also found that the ferrous number can be pulled down by surrounding iron, but on the other hand any number higher than 20 ferrous us usually a nail.
