Nailing the F75SE

Well you will have to excuse my semi-pun attempt, but my questions/comments are regarding hunting in nails with the F75 .... I've noticed thus far with this detector that a deeper and/or older shallow nail will sometimes hit as a coin. At times the vdi will even remain fairly stable, but only IF you don't rotate around the target. That being said, as soon as you move at all, the vdi will jump all over and iron grunt will kick in (disc. set at 4-6, sens. high as possible, BP mode, running either 2f or 4h tones) . I have dug at least 20 nails (mostly square) of various sizes and at various depths to confirm this. I will say that all of the nails dug were in a moderate stage of decay, ie. with halo/rust colored soil around the nail itself. My concern is that if I start ignoring these signals I will be passing partially iron masked coins. What are your folks' experience, am I assuming correctly? I know with the CZ series, the best way to avoid digging the deep nails was to listen for that iron grunt or break at the end of the target sweep. As Bartles and James would say, " Thank you for your support."

I assume you have a 5 inch coil with your F-75SE. Use the 5 inch and do a small area at a time. Ain't no secret mumbo jumbo solution. Take your time and try 3 tone. You can isolate targets better with the small coil. Dig the high tones. You may have to remove some nails to get to the better targets. Take your time and let the F-75s recovery speed do its thing. A site littered with nails and trash has been left by many hunters that didn't have the machine or the patience to hunt that site. You have the machine. Keep us posted with your finds. HH :fisher:

DE mode is best in heavy iron areas.
Sensitivity setting to whatever is stable.
Before setting the discrimination, dig a few of the native nails and see where they disc out then set the machine to just pop an crack on the nail.
Now the fun begins, if nails are very heavy I opt for the 5" coil and go very slow. I've dug many a coin with nails very close to them. It takes a little practice but the F75 performs very well in these areas.
Hope this helps

Thanks guys, I have the 5" coil and really like it. It has been my go to for these types of sites. I'll give De mode a shot and see if that helps.

I've used the 11" DD in nail pits with good sucess. I use BP mode, disc at 1, and generally what I find is that the nails will generally come in around say 7. Going slow anything I get that is above the "nail noise floor" will get investigated. Once I got an 18. Not a signal I'd normally dig, but because of the age of the site and the fact that I was in a pit of square nails, I dug this and it turned out to be a V nickle that rust fused to a square nail

Brian

Do you remember if the "18" was a solid four-way hit? Until I get a good handle of the F75, I tend to dig most solid, repeatable signals, unless it is a common pull tab vdi or other trash for the area. The regular iron pops and clicks were pretty easy to adjust to. My dilemna is whether or not to dig those high tone jumpy vdi hits that tend to grunt at the end of the target sweep and/or when changing the sweep by 90 deg....

thanks for the info posted.. my SE sometimes drives me crazy in those areas

I love the 5 inch coil myself and have dug silver quarters @ 10 inches.Dug a couple that bounced between 40 and 90,one had a bottle cap sitting on top of it!! Nice to hear from Brian again, its been awhile!!...hh rick in mi
