Nasty day out

I thought i would go out for a couple of hours today since they are saying we are going to get 3 to 5 inches over the next few day. There is at lest 3 inches already that just isnt going away because its to cold. Soooo i grabbed the detector and headed out. Everyone keeps saying im hunting in the wooded area so i thought id try it out. I found the snow not only deeper, but the leaves made it even fluffier. Seemed like i was digging 4 inches or deeper just to get to the soil. The soil was soft, damp and very loose... not bad. Now how did i do.... well i found 3 IHs, half dozen wheats with the oldest being 1919, a old cap gun in not the best of shape... but it was still kind of all together, a 1941 Merc, and a token. The token was the coolest find. It was brass and one side had Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal Oak Mich. with a picture of a church.... then on the back it read Charity Crucifixion Tower, dedicated Oct 11, 1931 AD. with a picture of a very tall tower.

What i found out is this tower was dedicated to Saint Therese de Lisieux. She was also know as The Little Flower. The church was initially built in 1925 in a largely protestant area of Royal Oak, Mich.. Two weeks after it opened the KKK burnt a cross in front of it. They built this tower/church as a protest to the KKK as the cross they could not burn in 1931 thru 1936. The tower has christ on a cross which is 28 ft high. In 1998 they declared it a national shrine.... one of only 5 in the US. I can find several old post cards and a Crucifix for sale.... but NO tokens. I suspect they sold or gave these away for a donation at the church while they were trying to build it. Back in the 30s they had a radio ministry to raise funds for the building. Anyone on here found one of these?? Ive got it tumbling so no photo yet.

Ok... heres the photos. I guess the correct term for this is a Medal not coin or token per sa. Anyone ever seen one of these? How about you Mich. folk?

Checked the link Larry provided and found the following:
217 21309 USA, brass crucifix 55x34mm, SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER ROYAL OAK, MICH., church of the notorious Father Coughlin, 1930s, AU $45.00

Bertman... ive saw one of those, its a cross. Thanks thou. It might come up as the crusifixtion tower. Thanks Larry ill give it some more chasing down. You get into medals.... they are tuff to run down, there just isnt a book like trade tokens and everyone in the day made them. This thing was pretty deep and back in the woods so im thinking it has some age on it.

Sounds like you did fairly well considering the conditions....You struck silver, got three Injuns, dug up a half dozen wheaties, and got a cool dated medal!!

Just think what you would have found in those woods had there been no snow?

Nice, Dew!!

Thanks Dan. I just dont like digging in all that muck. Once you get the dirt on your gloves the snow turns it to chocolate that gets all over you and your equipment. Dang park scrapped the roads... but not the parking lot so i was stuck for 30 min. until i got help. Im really not liking even going out. I was hoping for more silver out there where no one might of looked Dan. You dont know how many cans and trash gets thrown in those bushes until you try to detect in there. Wheres DarrellD... this is his time of the year haha.

That is cool Aaron.... every find one? Im assumeing they sold these, post cards, and other items to help pay for the church. Id say that might have been common back in the depression days.

Jutst another trinket for the ole box Bryce. I went back out there again today and picked up a couple more silver dimes and 4 wheats. The snow just isnt going away in the woods and the leaves are thick so you loose a lot of depth. The dirt melts in you hands.... makes it pretty muddy then the cold was freezing the dirt on the end of the probe. But it did get up to 28 today. Gave me some time to do a little scouting for the sled hills.
