Hello everybody,

I'm very new to this metal detecting and I really want to purchase one. After many hours of watching different machine on you-tube I really like Fisher F5. Is this a good machine for beginners like me who never done any metal detecting at all? Mostly I want to use metal detector is, beach (not in water) and parks and etc... I'm in Canada, Ontario,Toronto and not sure where to buy, I saw kellycodetectors with really good price comparing with others in Canada but i wasn't sure if the warranty would be good for Canada as well, any suggestion where to purchase? Also I was wondering if there is any of you guys live in Toronto.

Thanks in advance to all of you guys.

He may be able to hook you up.

I think the F5 is great detector for a beginner to learn on. The feature set is great, the performance is good, and it has lots of potential. As long as you aren't planning to dig 10" deep dimes (got to pay more for that) you would do fine with it.

I like it anyway :)

Good luck,
Mike

But be specific about your order.

You want the lastest F5 with the threaded coil connectors. I'd have the sales person pull what they are going to send you and check it with you over the phone just to make sure you get what you want.

I have the plug in version, and while I don't have any issue with it, I would like the threaded connector better. Save on coil costs if you ever decide to include another unit in the future that might share coils with it.

You may want to watch ebay and get used, I have got several detectors at about half the cost of new and the machines are close to new. The last one I got I am pretty sure it never was used outside, $600 detector for $300. You just need to keep an eye on the new listings and make the buy you can. You can look below at what I am using and I really like all of them, my brother has the F2 and I got a used F4 for a friend and all are real happy. I would expect your F5 would do a good job for you.
Good luck,

Ron in WV

Nothing wrong with Kelly-co. Give JW a call and talk to him about your concerns and while you're at it see if you can get a better price. Sometimes people will give you a better deal if you tell them you don't want all that "free" extra stuff. The worst that can happen is they will say no.

Welcome to the forum, Canada.

You can save $ upfront buying used, but with First Texas you get a 5 year warranty when you buy a new detector so you would be covered for 5 years with the F5, and make sure you save your receipt because you need it for warranty repairs. With a used detector you get nothing in the way of warranty and you probably wouldn't be far off you figure about $100 per trip to FT for a non-warrantied detector.

Metal detectors are sensitive electronic instruments that we use in the mud and dirt. So if you are going to use one regularly and keep it for more than a short period of time, figure on repairs being needed.

I've never bought from Kellyco, but I hear many good things about JW. If you buy from them, make sure you go through him! I have heard several stories of one hand not knowing what the other is doing there, so you want to have someone knowledgeable and conscientious like JW to make sure you are taken care of.

Richard at Backwoods detectors is a forum sponsor here also. I have gotten phenomenal service from him and would recommend highly.

Thanks to all of you guys, I really appreciated your comment and advise. I've been checking the eBay and haven't seen any good deal yet. Up here we have so much snow lately so I have sometimes to fine a good deal.

Here is a link to what I think is a nice looking detector and I know these are deep good machines. Not a lot of bells and whistles. If you was to get something like this you could get more info in the classic forum lot of good stuff.

And the snow here is really bad, looks like maybe 2 or 3"

Good luck on your detector search, new or used.

canada,

Being you are new to the forum I don't think you can send or receive PM's (personal message) yet, but when you are allowed send me one. Some things are better talked about off line. Being that we have so much snow my brother and I are setting up to do some indoor air testing of about 6 different types of detectors. My brothers forum name is MarkCZ, you may want to check out some of his post.

Hi Canada and welcome to the forum!
New or used the choice is yours!

Right now there is a buyers market for used and some great deals are out there for sure. Now along March or April the market will change a bit in that the used market price will go up a LOT, and so the price of buying new becomes more inviting.

But I've done VERY well in the used market as far as metal detectors, all but two of my detectors has been used! and to date NONE has ever had to be sent off for repairs! NONE! and I've owned,

Whites 5000/D ser 2 (New, my first detector, sold it used to a co-worker who says to this date that it was one the best detectors he has ever owned)

Teknetics 9000/B,
Fisher CZ7-a pro,
Bounty Hunter Land Star (I'm on my second one of those now)
Fisher Coin$trike, (I did have to buy a coil for this one, but at $40.00 I still only had $305.00 in it)
Teknetics 8500/B (this one was like 30 years old used when I got it, it only needs some battery clip work)

Fisher F2 (This I bought new and I am very pleased with it for what I bought it for, $215.00 NEW I can afford, its the thousands PLUS I can't deal with)

At the time I got that 9000/B was a time when there was No Way I could have bought that high end of a detector new! but I was able to get into the high end of detectors due to the used market. Same goes for the,
CZ7-a Pro,
Coin$trike.
I drive a $5,000 used car, that's what I can afford so $2,000 detectors are out! unless I can get a used one in mint condition two years or so old for $800.00.

Used for me as worked very well, yes! you could have a repair problem but if your careful and get a REALLY good deal its not likely, I never had to have ANY of my detectors sent off for repairs! but my thinking is that if someday down the road I land a REALLY good deal on a used detector (hundreds off) and I have to pay $139.69 to get it repaired then I'm still way better off.
And to this day I have NEVER had to send a single unit in for repairs, Not One!
Now, the coinstrike I got used did in up having a bad coil, but $40 bucks for a used one off from a forum member and the detector is as good as NEW! and I got $305.00 in it Total.

The used market in the world of detectors is just as important as the new market. In that people also trade detectors in at dealers, they resale them,
Get one you don't like you can send it back and trade up (at many dealers), they sell the returned units as used or demo units at a discount. So, you may want to contact one of the forum sponsor dealers and see what they got for used or demo's. They need to move their used inventory too.

Now back to a good beginners detector.
From what I've read your first choice of the F5 should work fine, but! you might consider opening up a little larger window of opportunity and keep in the same line of detectors your looking at.

The F4 would be another really good choice.

And if your really new at detecting then the F2 would be good to get you started and to find out for sure if you really like the hobby well enough to stay the course. If you do stay with the hobby then you don't have a fortune in the F2 and its makes a good second detector for just keeping in your car for sampling a drive by place,
or for cherry picking,
or having one to loan to a tag along (a friend).

Just some of my ideas.

Mark

Greetings Canada! and Welcome to the forum!

To be short and sweet the F5 I feel would be a good choice, I have tested and used the F2 that I got for the GF and we both love the thing. I was ordered for her but I snuck it out a few times playing with it. I tested 8" on a coin right with my other detectors. The F5 being the big brother of the F2 I think you'd be happy with it.

HH Rick

Thanks HH Rick and Mark for your advise and help. I know as soon as the weather gets better the price might go up so I'm looking at my options and looking if I can get a used F5 in good condition.... (still no luck) but if any body has one in good condition or knows anybody that might want to sell it I'm interested :)

thanks,
Canada

Here is a F4 that popped up today, thought you may want to watch it, just keep in mind what you can get it new for, I am thinking about $400. I will keep an eye out for a F5 or anything else that I would think whould be close to the F5 and send you a link. Just trying to help

Do be aware that a used unit "Will Not" have any warranty, even though the seller lists it as having a 5 yr warranty. Do a search on Findmall of posts by Mike Scott. He is the sales director for First Texas. He explains exactly how the Fisher/Teknetics warranty works.

WV62 gave you good info for the 1270, fantastic price and awesome detector still using mine, along with the F75 Ltd she goes real deep, not a lot of bells and whistles like the LTD but you can make a couple of set-up configurations with it, can't go wrong with the 1270.A lot of 1270 info on the classic Forum any info you need let me know.

I have never bought a metal detector off ebay. I've always, always, gotten better deals by just posting a "Want to buy" add in the Classifeds on the metal detecting forums.

Thanks Ron, I saved the link and will watch it, I
Mike I've looked in classified on-line but most of them wants to deal locally and none of the Canadian classified have hardly any metal detector for sale... Here in Canada is not as popular as in USA is. Bu thanks for you advise again, you are very helpful.

Terra you right I would consider having a brand new detector just because of 5years warranty but if I find a really good deal on a used machine I would probably get that instead.

thanks,
Canada
