Hi Canada and welcome to the forum!
New or used the choice is yours!
Right now there is a buyers market for used and some great deals are out there for sure. Now along March or April the market will change a bit in that the used market price will go up a LOT, and so the price of buying new becomes more inviting.
But I've done VERY well in the used market as far as metal detectors, all but two of my detectors has been used! and to date NONE has ever had to be sent off for repairs! NONE! and I've owned,
Whites 5000/D ser 2 (New, my first detector, sold it used to a co-worker who says to this date that it was one the best detectors he has ever owned)
Teknetics 9000/B,
Fisher CZ7-a pro,
Bounty Hunter Land Star (I'm on my second one of those now)
Fisher Coin$trike, (I did have to buy a coil for this one, but at $40.00 I still only had $305.00 in it)
Teknetics 8500/B (this one was like 30 years old used when I got it, it only needs some battery clip work)
Fisher F2 (This I bought new and I am very pleased with it for what I bought it for, $215.00 NEW I can afford, its the thousands PLUS I can't deal with)
At the time I got that 9000/B was a time when there was No Way I could have bought that high end of a detector new! but I was able to get into the high end of detectors due to the used market. Same goes for the,
CZ7-a Pro,
Coin$trike.
I drive a $5,000 used car, that's what I can afford so $2,000 detectors are out! unless I can get a used one in mint condition two years or so old for $800.00.
Used for me as worked very well, yes! you could have a repair problem but if your careful and get a REALLY good deal its not likely, I never had to have ANY of my detectors sent off for repairs! but my thinking is that if someday down the road I land a REALLY good deal on a used detector (hundreds off) and I have to pay $139.69 to get it repaired then I'm still way better off.
And to this day I have NEVER had to send a single unit in for repairs, Not One!
Now, the coinstrike I got used did in up having a bad coil, but $40 bucks for a used one off from a forum member and the detector is as good as NEW! and I got $305.00 in it Total.
The used market in the world of detectors is just as important as the new market. In that people also trade detectors in at dealers, they resale them,
Get one you don't like you can send it back and trade up (at many dealers), they sell the returned units as used or demo units at a discount. So, you may want to contact one of the forum sponsor dealers and see what they got for used or demo's. They need to move their used inventory too.
Now back to a good beginners detector.
From what I've read your first choice of the F5 should work fine, but! you might consider opening up a little larger window of opportunity and keep in the same line of detectors your looking at.
The F4 would be another really good choice.
And if your really new at detecting then the F2 would be good to get you started and to find out for sure if you really like the hobby well enough to stay the course. If you do stay with the hobby then you don't have a fortune in the F2 and its makes a good second detector for just keeping in your car for sampling a drive by place,
or for cherry picking,
or having one to loan to a tag along (a friend).
Just some of my ideas.
