Not one Cent.......Detecting in the foothills of the Catskills

I made it out yesterday for about three hours back to Ulster county. It was a nice afternoon to be out in the woods.

The Catskills may not look like much now, but you should have seen them a billion years ago.....

Anyhow, I gridded off some areas of this rather extensively stone walled area

I didn't find a whole lot except a button, part of a scale, and a Not One Cent Hard Times token.

I have previously detected this area and found numerous Indian Heads, about four large cents, buttons, powder flask, spoons - so I wasn't surprised to not find a whole lot today)

Well, my nineteen month old just woke up, I will have to cut this short....

The token came out of the ground looking really nice, but when I got home and brushed the dirt off under water it literally fell off.... So sad... I have seen coins flake and fall apart before but this was incredible

I worked on digging out the privy or well a bit more. I am not normally into doing something like this but this one looks promising. The picture doesn't properly show the scale of depth that I am already down....I am looking forward to some help in removing more stones so that it is safer and I can get deeper.

Best time of the year to go in the woods. Doesn't get much prettier. Just be careful, it's hunting season. May want to trade that brown cap for something else.

I was thinking about that, thankfully it's still archery season, and I am right next to houses and dogs, you can see the house in the background of one photo.
A couple years ago a friend of my fathers was shot through the ear while hunting, i believe he had blaze orange on too! Makes you shake your head and wonder how?

Nice find on the token.

The search just makes the ultimate finds even sweeter! Keep looking!

Nice token find. I love the Catskills

Thanks guys..

Jim, I did get your pm the other day. One of these days we'll get out Detecting together!

Gary, wear some color.
I stopped hunting when a man in my area was sitting on a log, smoking a cigarette and someone shot him, thinking he was a bear. How many bears do you know that smoke?
People are stupid, be safe.

Crazy,

I am looking forward to getting to the bottom of that hole. Hopefully its not too deep. At least it's cooler out to all the creepy crawlies are moving around as much.

Sorry to hear about the details falling off. I have had the same flaking happen on my 1798 large cents. I knew I shouldn't have cleaned them as much as I did. Lesson learned! This darn NY ground is not kind to copper.

I am wondering if it is some sort of composition issue being that it isn't a real coin, but i'am not sure if they are made from large cents originally. I can say that the other large cents I have found there haven't been nearly this bad ...
Anyhow when I first started cleaning it under gently running water when I got home, I am looking at it going huh? Where is my patina going? and this is happening from lightly running water? Heck my 1793 Liberty cap stood up a lot better. Once I realized what was happening I just left the reverse instead of destroying it...
