Ok. I have a question about this new machine......

All metal detectors are going to give you its best guess as to what the target is; thats all it can do.
Even with all this fancy technology at your finger tips, do you find its really that much more accurate?
Are you still digging junk? Its hard for me to believe that you won't dig your share of junk targets.
Would like to hear from all of you V3 owners about this particular topic. Please don't be shy.

I'll fess up and be the first to answer.

Yes, I do end up digging some junk. If it sounds good it's diggable and I'm still learning this machine, but things are starting to come around and fall into place.

You guys dig junk? I dont dig any.... Let me rephrase that. I have been digging everything in hopes of finding the other half to the pocket watch I found in the first month of detecting. I have been pulling anything that gives me a vdi. It has resulted in me finding a clad dime and a penny. I am somewhere near 1000 bad targets and half a dozen keepers.

Heres half a 5 gallon bucket full. This does not include large iron overload signals.

Its simple enough. You can recognize a dime (usually), a quarter (most of the time), a nickel (most of the time), or a penny (except for those half destroyed zinc pennies, which you can still recognize most of the time), but....

For every easily recognized target, no matter how good your machine is, there is a piece of junk that copies its response to a "T", so somtimes, you're gonna be fooled. Here's the important thing, though: unlike US coins, there is no "standard" design, shape, and metal content for jewelry. Its unusual to find two with exactly the same detector response, so it's much more of a guessing game. And, unfortunately, there are a zillion pull tabs and pieces of can slaw out there that respond very much like the good jewelry. So, you dig some junk if you expect to find jewelry. The V3 is about the best there is (imho) in helping you to make a "dig it or pass it by" decision, but it's still your experience and gut feel that rules. Pass the "iffy" signals by, lose out on some jewelry, but find more coins ('cuz you waste less time digging junk), or find fewer good targets but occasionally hit the jackpot digging those "maybe's"....

The V3 is going to help you make a decision, but it is not an x-ray machine.

Last weekend I dug junk signals that turned out to be a 14K gold chain, a mashed up 10K gold ring with 24 diamond chips and a .925 silver ring. The rest of my "good " signals were clad.
Keep on digging and sooner or later you"ll find something better.

If your asking do I dig less junk in pursuit of coin....yes. When it comes to a jewelry hunt....same. Even with a coin hunt though, if the target rings deep, still digging a VDI with scattering...but they "mostly" turn out to be coin. Aluminum (unfortunately) is a metal that's of "quality use characteristics" and many of it's properties mirror gold. The only two things, that will increase your gold finds, is picking your area wisely and fast retrieval speeds.

A completely different technology will have to be used for detectors to tell the difference between the two. Some of natures animals can, but tech.,available to metal detector manufactures, can't. (I personally have no doubt it is coming though.) When? Don't hold your breath as you'll become a Smurf.

LOL Mike. It was exactly what I was thinking. I'm having fun reviewing the manual. A big part of detecting with a detector like this can just be playing around with the controls, guessing targets, etc.

As always, I hunt by audio. Most times I use a detector with no display, but those times when I do use a display detector, the audio determines my digging. I will at times use the display for additional info, but I had already made up my mind by audio first.
If I'm short on time & coin hunting, then I'll consider some use of the display because they have the common coins down fairly good.
As far as the additional bells & whistles detectors, I'll generally focus tweaking settings they offer.
Junk - If I'm not short on time and not just coin hunting, then I'll dig up the junk. Digging up an iffy signal is the best way to confirm. And if it is junk, then that's one less piece.Good or junk, after I dig it up, I will re-sweep the spot. Never know what else may be there and/or if masking took place.
If I didn't dig up junk, then that "what if" will linger in my mind.
Not always & not often enough, but digging up junk signals has paid off.That's enough for me.
I'll generally use AM most times, manual GB & threshold - because that's what I'm more used to. Although sometimes I use the bells and whistles of AGB, silent search etc, it sometimes doesn't feel right - but I'm more older style I guess so I keep going back to basics often. Maybe something from the BFO/TR days, I dunno.
So since I don't rely on the display, I need quality headphones to make a go at detecting.
So most of my detecting I feel fine using the non display units, but do enjoy the once in awhile use of bells & whistles - so I have both types. It's nice to have that choice for the detecting mood I'm into.
I like getting into trashy areas with small coils and get to cleaning - maybe that also has something to do with my preference of basic non display detectors most times.
For now I'll keep my basic non display detectors and the ones that are loaded w/display, but stick mainly to my audio hunting.
