Old House Hunt -- Mercs. -- Buffalo -- Pat. 1879 Buckle

E-Trac-Ohio

Well-known member
I went to an old abandoned farm house yestersday for a few hour hunt. I got permission to hunt this late 1800's house last spring - I only found two Wheat Cents in the front yard at that time.
Yesterday ( this time running in 2 Tone Ferrous) I dug - 1940 & 1943 Mercury Dimes - one Buffalo Nickle (no date) - 1940 and 1952 Wheat Cents and an old brass buckle with " PAT. DATE 1879" on it.

I was told that this is not a belt buckle but something called a "Conway Buckle" or similar - that's used on a horse harness.
Has anyone seen a buckle like this one before - any ideas ?

HH --- Mark

Cool old buckle.

And nice job with the rest of the coins, great variety.

I've dug a couple of these buckles before-one in NE Ohio and one in Logan, OH. I was told they were doe horses but that's all I know. Hope toy can find something out. HH

Thanks for sharing the finds with us Mark! Congratulations on them.

i have found a buckle very similar and was told it was something for a horse also...besides 2 tone what other programs are you running....i've done over 40 cellar holes....federal....and now have to do them over with my new e track....yikes.....just wondering what modes you suggest....thanks...ginger

Nice indeed to pull silver out and the harness buckle is in good shape. Two leather harness straps overlap and run along the rump of the horse. It keeps them together with that buckle or keeper as we called it.

Thanks for the pics and HH

Hi Gingerlm, I'm not an expert on ET settings - but the are some people in the forum that are.
I've have had my ET for 14 months and have approx. 600 hrs. in the field with it - all I can only tell you - is what works for me ...
Theres one guy in the E-Trac forum that has over 2500 hrs. on his machine - I guess he's retired !

If you don't have it already - be sure get Andy's Explorer & E-Trac Book - it's a piece of gold - it goes way beyond the factory manual !
Read and post In the E-Trac forum as much as possible - theres a lot of real nice people in the E-Trac Forum - the combination of these two is a huge help !

Log as much time in the field with your machine as possible - I feel that every time you go out - you learn a little more - it's seems to really add up across time.

I like running in Two Tone Ferrous the best by far - some people don't like it at all - one of those Ford - Chevy things I guess.
I also like the 'Sizing Mode" much more than the "Regular" pinpointing mode - tried it once - never went back to the Regular mode.

As far as having to go back to all of the cellar holes that you have already hunted in the past - your very lucky !
You already know where these cellar holes are - the hard parts already done !
I go back to sites that I hunted before I was really familar with my machine - and find good stuff that I missed in the past - about 90% of the time !

Good luck - looking forward to reading stories and seeing photo's of your future finds !
