Hi all. I went to an old spot, one that I had hit fairly hard when I first started metal detecting. I was using a DFX with the stock 9.5 coil at the time. I had read a couple of post lately talking about using Ferrous sounds. I always seem to forget to use this as a setting. I am aware, but just don't seem to use it very often. Well, I went to the farm and asked permission from the owner, he said yes, and I got to it. Oh, this was last night. I still had on my 12X15 SEF coil and thought I would keep it on for this place.I thought maybe there was some deeper stuff that I missed and had cleared out most of the surface trash. I also thought it would be good to try the ferrous sounds. The area that I am talking about is not very large and I thought I had covered it pretty well the times I went there with my DFX. Maybe I did, or didn't, but the ETRAC pulled out coins that I left behind. After a while I noticed that the stuff I was finding was no deeper than 7 inches. I thought that the pro coil may be better suited here. I had to leave last night, but went back today with the pro coil already on.
Last night I found the rosie dime, two buff nicks, one wheat, and some clad. Today I set up with Ferrous sounds 2 tone and I changed the response to smooth from normal. I let the machine figure out where it wanted to be in auto(24) and put it in manual plus one (25). my normal settings are deep off, recovery fast off, trash high, ground difficult......conductive 4 tone. sounds normal.
It ran super smooooth. slightly smoother in auto. When I went over a coin there was NO mistaking it. There was some falsing , but the sounds were chopped compared to the long sounds of the good targets. I dug a few of the iffy ones just to be sure, and feel pretty confident that you can trust the machine. It was hot today, and almost blew it off. I set my goals low, and I was hoping for at least one merc. That was my goal for today, and would have considered the day a success. To my surprise, I did a little better. I got a couple more buffs two wheats, a war nick, a washington Q and a walking half. I also got the normal mix of clad. I had just dug a clad quarter and about a foot away I got the same #'s and tone. I figured another clad quarter posibly silver. I couldn't believe it when the half popped out. it was a little deeper than the clad Q. That made my day. I don't seem to get many silver Q's and halfs are like hen's teeth.
I am glad I motivated to go out in the heat, and I think I learned a quite a bit about using the ferrous tones. Dan
