Omega - Frequency Offset

I've happily been using my Omega at full sensitivity and generally no discrimination for months now. Running it "hot" is generally pretty quiet (except when I set it down.) Sometimes it does get a little chatty, especially as the morning turns into noon, for whatever emi reason. Anyway, was hunting the other day and it got a little bit chatty. I'm ashamed to say I had never used the frequency offset button, outside of on accident! (Padded gloves will do that.)

Short version of the story - The detector got really quiet. I didn't think to ever use the offset as I thought it would only help a little bit and was meant more so for hunting with other detectors.

So, if your Omega is a little chatty, please try the frequency offset...

Does changeing the frequency (frequency offset) make it quiet when you set it down to dig a target? (with the sensitivity "cranked up")

Generally no, but it depends on the time of day. I have only done it once and the improvement was so much better that I had to share it. It went from a steady and slightly annoying chatter to absolute stillness. I do believe it chattered a bit on the ground.

Just got my Omega yesterday, it's been raining for the last 2 days so have not got to take it out yet. Have been air testing it with my Tesoro Vaquero using stock coils on each machine, I'm impressed, Omega is testing equal to Vaquero, maybe getting a little more with the Omega. Can't wait to take her outside and see what it will do in the ground. Thanks for the info Earthmansurfer I'll keep the frequency offset in mine when I take her out.

Funny, I find the 3 frequencies somewhat worthless. The frequencies are just too close to each other to typically make much of a difference in EMI, and that is my problem. Maybe 1/10 times I use it to offset EMI, will it mitigate it more than just a little.

I've not had a great deal of success with frequency shift, either. Can never tell much difference. Particular;y, if it is really severe emi. HH jim tn

I have found that my Omega is the same.
The ground here in the north west of England runs in the 69 - 75 range.
As soon as i have GB' d the machine i move it up a Freq. it does settle down nice and quiet.
I seem to be using the Omega more than my Explorer SE now.
My elbow does not hurt now !!!!

I guess there could be a few reasons why this works for some of us and not others. Most notably, the strength of the interference is up there along with the actual frequency (both of which I know nothing about.) I think it might also have to do with internal noise. I run my sensitivity on max and maybe the noise is partly due to that and for whatever reason changing the frequency helps? Hmmmm...

As Chaddy said, I turn the detector on and switch it to frequency two. I started doing that as soon as I discovered it helped and it kept working in different, albeit nearby, locations.

A note, I thought that it would make no difference and that is why I never tried it. I know, terrible reason, but I'm still shocked at the difference. So, if it hasn't worked for you YET, don't let that not stop trying as it's just a button push away. You never know. (and don't forget "past performance is no guarantee of future results" and vice versa of course.)

I often use the FREQ to make de MD really quiet after GroundBalancing and setting SENS tot the max (95-99)
I discovered this bij accident when walking with another MD nearby

It does not change the scattering when laying down or lifting the MD. Therefore I always try to have the coil on the ground when getting the object out of the ground.

Feet on the ground, bending through my knees , the md "stands" on the ground resting against my shoulder. Always nicely quiet!

Mine chatters when I lay it down to recover. I usually either turn the sens down or hit the stereo/mono switch on my HPs... both work and are easy to reset.

I fuond out yesterday that the Omega does not care for the V3i... when the V gets near the Omega fusses a bit.

I found that out about the v and the Omega, too, at our club hunt. The Omega did not like the v, for sure. HH jim tn

Omega, with the right coil and settings, does a very nice job of 'target finding' in the real world, too.
