HI folks; I was just reading thinkin2's reply post below and he hit the nail on the head.No ring or anything else is worth a person losing their home. Kudo's to you guy.His post brought up a serious situation that happened here in Ipswich, Mass... What happened was that last year there was a serious storm and several houses fell into the sea during it.As the storm was covered by the tv news and papers one particular house fell to the horror of the owner and the public who watched several follow up telecasts during which a few guys came out with detectors and began searching "DIRECTLY" beneath the houses that fell.Unbeliievably everyone thought they were trying to help out the owners and recover some of their property."BUT" when asked if they were in fact trying to help out they cold heartedly, and I AM being nice here, stated to everyones shock and horror that they stated, qoute, "NO we are "TREASURE HUNTERS" and we are here to see if we can find some good stuff here for ourselves. This is a good "OPPORTUNITY" for us".The local police rightfully banned them from the area and I think they even tried to press chages against these morons. No offence to morons.!!!! The outcome is now that detecting is banned from the entire island and surrounding area beaches.I don't know if any of them were actually charged in this mess but they should be hung. What gets me is that they had the nerve to call themselves "TREASURE HUNTERS". They ae NOT "TREASURE HUNTERS" they are nothing more than common thieves and pillagers.I have spent "39" years now trying to keep the name of TREASURE HUNTERS clean and free from exactly the type of stygma and misconceptions that these vermin caused.I'm still incensed by it as you can tell. The TREASURE HUNTING Community and TREASURE HUNTERS I know "are" good, decent, hard working, law abiding people and may God bless you all. If you should "ever" see anyone acting like that do us all a favor and do one or two things.Kick them square in the skivvies, report them, or do both which I like better. Also please make sure that when you hear the name TREASURE HUNTER being used to describe these types of guys kindly inform the TV news, papers, people and Authorities about the difference between them and a real TREASURE HUNTER. With this said, I have "never" vented like this before but I feel it is time for us real TREASURE HUNTERS to stand up for ourselves and our hobby/sport/profession and rid ourselves of these vermin once and for all. Anyway, back at the Ponderosa ha ha; I await yuor replies. until later; May God Bless All Of You And Yours. PEACE:RONB

wow now thats just depressing.....
this hurts us ALL......
im just speechless here..
good luck to all..

Idiots like that that makes the detecting hobby look bad .
There's always someone out there that won't follow the rules.
I think that your justified in your reaction and feel most of the people on this forum feel the same way.
You hear of many areas that are banned nowadays thank to azz@#$% like them.:rage:

Hi John; Kicker is that it is 100% true. That was a year ago and I'm still stunned.Anyway I already said how I feel in a "nice' way. Thanks. Good Digging. PEACE: RONB :surrender:

Think of the impact had one of these hunters stepped forward offering their services to help recover valuables for the owners!

Something we may think about if we want to put our hobby in a positive light.

Regards All,

CJ

So where were the police in the first place???? When stuff like this happens in some states they automatically make the area off limits immediately to prevent looters from taking belongings. I am willing to bet that some of those looters had police connections.

Sometime ago I went with someone I thought was decent , We went to a beach late in the afternoon summer time, there were still people hanging out enjoying the beach I started detecting respecting the area's where people were still relaxing enjoying the time until I seen that my hunting partner was standing still doing nothing, I went up to and asked what was going on did you give up you want to go ? The reply was I am just watching people just wait and see what I do , so I hanged around , he then said you see those people getting up ?" watch this he went over there while the people were still just 10 feet away started detecting the area in which they were relaxing , came back to me and showed me the jewelery he found that was under their blanket , I looked in the spot that he did and seen these people still walking towards their car I said they are still here give it back to them the reply was ha ha ha ha no way Never again did I go out with this person Its funny that he belong to a club No respect at all very greedy person This kind of hunting I think is SICK.... preying on and watching people get up and detecting where they were and finding there stuff while in line of sight and not having the decency to return it to them

Don't assume that it belonged to those people...........it may not have. Assume nothing in life.......only facts. If he saw them drop it, then it is wrong not to give it back. Plus detecting while the beach still has a lot of people on it is inviting nothing but trouble. You can be accused of stealing their money and belongings when you did not do anything wrong........some people have a weird sense of humor and derive pleasure out of seeing the police harass someone innocent.

Some people do have a weird sense of humor that's for sure. I try to avoid people on the beach as much as possible. I've had them harass me even in the water. Its a hobby that a lot of people have a misconception or misunderstanding of what or why you're doing what you do. Hence you become the target of their humor.:sadwalk:

This happened on Plum Island in Newbury, MA. The waves were so strong it first blew the floor out of the house and with it everything on the first floor. Not an easy place for police in a small town to make off limits. there is a parking lot three house down from where the house was partially destroyed and a lot of beach to "secure" The decided it was too dangerous to fix the home and too dangerous to go in to take out the personal belonging. The excavators came in and the rest is history.

You should get a group of decent people together to sign a letter offering the homeowners the service of trying to find anything that they may have lost and that may still be there. Also stating your your horror at hearing people who represent your hobby behaving in such a manner. If you can get the homeowners onboard, (face to face) you may be able to get something going to actually try and help. I don't imagine you'll ever get the place open to detecting again but you may get a dispensation for this project to try to help the people with their loss and you may help to reform our image but be sure you have honest people. Offer to have the police or the homeowners present to watch... be sure someone is there to watch.. maybe the local media. If you could get it done, insisting on it being completely in the open you could do a world of good.

This needs to be addressed, not left as it is. You just might be able to reach someone. They know that there are good people and jerks in every profession, every hobby, every town, and frankly... every family. They just need to see in your eye that, though not responsible... you care and are really as offended as theyare that someone would do this.

Couch it as an offer to try and make things right because just maybe you actually can help.

What a horrible story.

The worst thing anyone can do is insult you and say no.

I am horrified. They may as well have been pulling gold teeth from corpses.

I have never had trouble but I think i'd just tell people... "yeah, I spent 5k on detectors so I can find pocket change".. to me it isn't about the finds as much as it is about the hunt itself. It is like going through junk shops, like collecting stamps, it is like rockhounding, it is like when we used to count VWs when we were kids going on vacation. The words Treasure Hunting have done more to hurt our image in the public eye than anything. I am not a "treasure hunter", I recover history. I collect lost coins, I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Most of my CW relics, all the best ones, are on display somewhere else. I display them in the office of the property where I found them. I've never sold anything I have found and I have looked for years for a 3 carat diamond ring a lady lost in her yard. I still haven't found it but the ring search turned up a CW calvary camp with loads of great relics. One day I will find the ring and i'll contact the newspaper and the local cable show. Get some good press for our hobby and a pic in the paper returning the lost ring to her... with an offer to help anyone. I'm not a treasure hunter, i'd love to find one but I don't research lost treasure and go hunt it... and I am not looking for beer money or lunch money. It is amazing what some people think that we are doing. We need all the good publicity we can get. We need to go out of our way to get it. We need to offer to help the police and the local history society and the state archeologist, which I have done to try and help them in their search for the Cherokee removal fort in Kingston, GA.

We need to be more active with the handliing of our image... you know, maybe we need a national association of historic recovery.

This story really pisses me off and I haven't read it all yet.

there can be no indication that we are trying to get the area open again... it all needs to be done face to face or maybe a well worded letter to the editor to the homeowners.

These people are absolute scum of the earth.

If I were one of the homeowners those hunters may have ended up being shark bait. That is no different from breaking and entering. No different from robbery, just because my stuff wnds up in the yard or on the beach doesn't mean someone else can come and get it... a man has a right to protect his property... I think i'd have introduced them to me FNP-40.

I'd be willing to make the trip to MA, at my expense to be part of a party of hunters to try and help these people and donate 100 bucks to a general fund to help them too. This is an opportunity to make a difference I think... if we could get through to the people who can make a decision.

Julien, i'm with you ! I'll put up another $100.00. I'll pay my own way and work my a** off to help these people if i can. Live in lower Delaware, have Excal 2, will travel !

Hi Folks; Thanks. I do apppreciate your generosity on this topic.Thing is that it happened abouut a year ago and the owners moved away. The State stepped in and basically banned detecting in buch of differnt areas because of these clowns.Sadly it is too late to help out now. The damage is done. I wanted to go and help the owners rebuild but I was flat in bed after having had major back surgery. The whole situation just gauled me.Anyway, thanks a lot for your kindness. It helps anywhere you are. PS: The clowns I found out were barred from ever detecting again "by the Court." Thank God for that. Anyway until later: PEACE:RONB :clapping: :detecting:

PS: Welcome to the Forum.

Agreed with the sentiments.

I got on to a surf life saving carnival loctation last week. Saw the pictures from the previous years event and saw how many people were at the beach that day. Went down on the last day of the event just to "scope it out" and to my horror there were two guys basically detecting the sand as people lifted up thier towels to leave.

On one hand I kind of admire their complete lack of shame and dare I say it self respect. On the other hand I think it gives us all a bad name and I would hate to pull out a nice bit of jewelry only to have some tearfull woman run up to me and claim it as theirs.

Why even cause the greif in the first place by bahving like that. All they had to do (like I did) was wait till the next day (or even later in the eveing) when everyone has gone home and its all good... but people have to be greedy and grabby and thoughtless dont they ? And it gives us all a "look" most of us dont want to be part of.

The end result of which will be complaints to authorities and more bans and restrictions on our hobby. So I agree.... do the right thing!

Good Post!

Wow Barker,
Your story highlights just how important a role personal character plays in our hobby in particular. Like no other hobby I can think of, there are so many instances and situations that arise when hunting, where we have to make decisions based on right and wrong. If you haven't learned the difference, you're lost. My guess, and I'm not defending these nitwits one bit (no offense to nitwits) is that they had no idea how morally, ethically and legally wrong what they were doing was. I have had friends (one in particular) who don't detect, constantly suggest tactics and angles I could use to benefit myself at others expense. I always tell them that it's not about that and they just don't get it. Therein lies the problem, since their first thought is how to act like a banker ( bad economy ring a bell ?) they automatically think that that's our ultimate motive. I saw it on someones signature on this forum " A liar will assume you're lying ". How true. The upside for us is that we realize that a true detectorist has to have strength of character to enjoy this craft and keep at it so we all know that a true MD'er, by definition, is a good person. The self-satisfaction and great feeling that comes from helping another (returning a valuable, etc) far outweighs any monetary gain we may deceive others, and ourselves into. The interest you pay in guilt will wipe out any profit. BTW - JBOW, I couldn't have said it any better myself. I apologize if I've insulted any bankers on this forum. Thanks for putting up with my long dissertation, just felt it was worth saying.
