ProPointer Vs. Sunray In-line probe?

Hi Everyone, I am currently using ProPointers (2 of them), one mounted to each my Se Pro and my ET. I have been thinking about trying an x1 inline probe on my ET. From those of you that have tried the inline probes and the propointer, which do you prefer? I have heard mixed things form people. I have spoken to several people that have had the inlines that got rid of them and are using propointers now, but recently, I have met a few people who swear by the inlines. I am really happy with my propointers, but I have never tried an x1. Your input is greatly appreciated. HH -Marc

I have in-line probes on both of my minelab detectors.I purchased 2 garrett pro pointers and since i bought the garrett's i havent switched the in line probes on since!

If my x-1 inline probe didnt work i probably would'nt go detecting again until it was sent in and fixed.

When i got my in-line probe i absolutely loved it and believe it works great, same sound and all but does add weight to the detector and cord becomes a bit of a problem sometimes.Only time i will use is when battery is dead in my garrett pro pointer.Both work just like the hand held better.

Some guys will disagree but I prefer the Garrett simply because I don't want to make the detector any heavier. I get it that the Sun Ray discriminates and can be of help in heavy iron, but for me the Garrett does the job just fine.

Im Brand new to this forum and only 3 Months with the E-trac, but I can tell you this..... I love my X1 since I got one 2 months ago and wouldn't go hunting without it. It does make the detector a little heavier but I dont really notice a difference anymore. I love the fact that it rings up and shows the numbers on the detector just like the detector does by itself. So when you get the hole open you can see exactly what it is you are digging

I have both, and the main reason I prefer the X-1 is the target ID and tones. If there is more than 1 target in the hole, say a dime and junk target you will see & hear them all. I have dig and dug with the pro pointer only to find it was pointing to the junk target and not the good one.

I carry both on every trip. There are times, dictated by the circumstances, that one is preferable to the other. I like to hear the precise source of that sweet high pitch when near junk, and on the other hand, there are times I use the Pro Pointer and don't switch the X1 at all. I also use a swingy thingy augmented by a modified tent pole/big lugg device to take the weight off my shoulder, so the weight is not a factor for me. I will say, IF I had to choose one over the other, it would hands down be the X-1 probe.

The audio variable alarm and the ruggedness plus the vibrator with my set-up below
increases the depth to 4" on quarters makes this Garrett ProPointer a winner.

Thanks everyone, this has been a really helpful thread, for me at least. I still don't know if I will go out and get an X1 tomorrow, or not, as the preferences seem split pretty much in half. I do love the propointer, and I do think it is the best handheld PP on the market currently. The thing that really bugs me about them, however, is all the noise they make. Every time I am using one, all eyes are on me every time I turn that thing on. In some cases, being discreet would be in my bet interest. I also like the idea of target separation very much, as many of you mentioned, a lot of the time there is junk mixed with a keeper, and the propointer doesn't sniff out the keeper in a whole with junk. I think I might open one of my propointers tonight and cut the wire to the speaker. Vibration alone would be perfect for me. If someone from Garret happens to read this thread, please include the option to turn of the speaker on a future model!!!!!! Something as simple as holding down the power button for 10 seconds to turn sound on, or off, would be awesome. I will replace both of my propointers, with two new ones, if you do. I mean it! Build it, and I will buy the first two. Thanks for your help guys. I will go to the local MD shop tomorrow to check out the X1, but I am not completely sold as of yet. HH -Marc

I currently own and use both, as sometimes my wife digs for me because of my bad back and the X-1 comes up a little short on the cord.

I ran into a small problem on the Propointer a few weeks ago at a club coin hunt. Using my E-trac we located a quarter reading and silver quarters were buried, but no matter what I did I could not get the Propointer to locate the quarter. I switched over to the X-1 and found the quarter immediately. All coins were buried no more then 2" deep. I felt I may have had a low battery on the Propointer (had only used the Propointer a couple times since we bought it) but didn't have a battery tester with me.

When we got home I checked the battery on my tester and though it didn't peg the tester it still showed the battery to be very near a full charge. I tested the Propointer on a quarter and didn't start picking it up till I got with in 2". I put a new battery in the Propointer that now pegged the tester and tested it on a quarter and was able to pick up that same quarter beginning at 2 1/2 ", It did seem strange to me that no lower then the battery was it would make that much difference in the distance it would pick up that quarter. My wife now prefers to use the X-1 as she trusts it more.

Put tape over the small speaker holes on the pro pointer and it will really make it less irritating to those around you. I done that since day one and because it vibrates there is absolutely no need for the audio. Most wear headphones anyway. Unless you take off the headphones it's going to be harder to hear...depending on the dampening the headphones achieve. jim

biggest problem with X-1 that you have connect between coil and control panel, theoretically exist small drop sensitivity--very small, plus its heavy. but if you new to hobby my suggestion buy x1 and use, x1 very good probe. Garrett is simple and its works, if its brakes you still have working detector and can hunt.
