Quest for 1000th Wheat Cent This Year

I had 1 1/2 hours after work (at the most) to try and find 6 wheats. I rushed over to Lola Park - to a spot that has given in the past. Not long into the search I got the first one. 5 more to go. Shortly thereafter, another one. 4 more to go. About 5 minutes of wandering I dug yet another. 3 more to go - this just may happen. More looking, then a loud wheat signal - out pop 2 from the same hole. 1 MORE TO GO. I look close by and get a nice tone, but the numbers are higher. Dig the hole, and its silver - a '37 merc - damn. Move around to some longer grass that's tougher to swing in. Get a choppy, but repeatable signal, 01-46 on the E-Trac. That's a half dollar signal - but it almost never works out that way. Cut the plug, pop it out and there laying in the bottom of the hole is a '45 walker - damn. It's getting real dark now - I'm rushing - get another sweat sounding signal - dig the plug - damn, another merc - this time a '43. Out of time, with 1 left to go. FAILDED - but I'LL TAKE THIS KIND OF FAILURE ANY DAY!!!

wow, nice hunt...but did I hear you correct? You ACTUALLY want 1,000 wheats??? I am at 816 and I hate em! I literally detest digging wheats. To me they only mean silver is near. I sell mine on ebay, they are everywhere!!!!! if you are at 1,000 wheats how many silver are you at? 250 I am guessing?

Great hunt - congrats on the silver - the Walking Liberty Half looks fantastic !

Terry, on our local MD forum we track all of our finds (I don't know if the moderator wants us to give links to other forums, so I won't) - wheats are one of the coins that keep you on the "front page". As you said, they are THE indicator that silver is near. Here in the Detroit area even they are getting tough to find (lots of detectorists here for a long time). I like finding them - they also give me an indication of the general age of the site. Silver is still king - but finding any "older" coin is cool. I wish I had that many silvers this year - actual number - 180.

Thanks for asking!

Found a 1909 svdb wheat this year so they're ok in my book:thumbup:

I like wheats. Prefer IH's, but I actually think like you Doc. "Any" old coin is cool! Congratulations on the finds and thanks for the picture. A return back to that area is almost guaranteed to get you your next wheat, plus maybe a little added silver!

I too like wheats but have only 168 this year. Did finally get the elusive 1943 steelie this year of course it was in a 6 wheat spill. I love the green patina on the early teen wheats.

Funny story Doc, that was an excellent hour and a half of detecting. Congrats and thanks for the pictures and good story hope you hit your goal.

Detroit area here too. Just found a '45 walker this weekend up north. I think I'm up to 40 silvers this year so I'm obviously slacking. I've been in the bad habit of passing up on wheat signals when I get tired after three/four hours with the e-trac (I really wish they made it hip mountable). Like everybody else I use them as indicators... ESPECIALLY if I'm at a park/site I'm unfamiliar with. I used to get excited about them as a kid and put them into flips, but I throw them into a box and forget about them. I probably don't even need to ask this but do people actually pay for dug up wheats on ebay???

At a flea market Tuesday and a guy was selling wheat pennies for 25cents or 5 for a dollar. Regular date indians $6.00 and was selling some. He did'nt have any 1877s. I can't sell 5 quarters for a dollar. Must be bad karma. HH :minelab:

I have no idea why people want dug wheats, but they do, and I am not complaining, if I can get 7 to 8 cents for them I am happy

Actually, I love the idea of keeping track of the number of wheats you find. I've been digging enough since getting my Etrac that I have just been tossing them into a "wheat" can which I'm saving for my kids. Thanks for the inspiration of actually keeping count!
