Safari on way in to repair shop -Anyone else experience this ?

Well-known member
After recently speaking with Minelab technician John Watson, I dropped off the Safari at the UPS store yesterday to be shipped to his location in Downers Grove, IL. The problem that I am ocassionally facing is that the unit will go into a shut-down mode but immediately power itself back up with the start up music. This will happen after selecting any hunting mode and noise cancellation has completed and I

did this person give you any time frame as to how long and at what $$$$ it would take to fix your detector??

Hope ya get it back soon.. Mark ( ohio )

Sorry to hear about your Safari. I know you are a long time user and a successful one so don't get offended. Did you try a factory reset? The reason I ask is that what few problems I have had that has worked for me. Hopefully you will get your machine back soon. I sent my Excallibur in last November and Minelab had it back a lot faster than I expected and done a whole lot more than I had asked for. Keep us posted.

Mark- No, he didn't want to speculate until diagnosing the unit and He did seem sincere on the phone.
Hershey-Thanks for the suggestion and kind words. I did try the reset and I think it worked. It's the looseness in the control box that concerns me and that it will happen
again unless checked out. Glad you had great customer service support with the Xcal. Hope I can get it back by the end of the month as my wife will visiting our daughter in Baton Rouge, leaving me the entire weekend to hunt ! Geaux Tigers.

I too have had similar problems with the safari. When flipping the excess dirt off the coil, mine would shut down. I took it the dealer where it was purchased
and we realized the problem was with the detector. SGT. RIKER helped me pack the machine and send it back to minelab. Upon hearing from the manufacturer, cat hair seemed to be the problem. Really ! I wonder why the battery pod and contacts were replaced. Insofar as problems with the machine exist; once the " bugs" are worked out, I have no doubt it will work very well. I must say that SGT. RIKER has gone above and beyond normal measures to make certain that his customers are satisfied; heck, this guy even loaned me an F 75 while my Safari was being looked at. How's that for customer service?

I too have just lately had the same problem...so you are not alone. Safari just shuts down completly for a few seconds. Thought it might be overheated, but you say it happens 10 min inti the hunt. I cleaned off all the batteries as I had to reload them in the field so they were kind of dusty. It didn't do it last time I was out...but I"ll be pretty upset if it does. Will try to reset. Please post what your technician says after you get it back!!!! Thanks!

I had the same problem, also. Happened 3 or 4 times the week after I bought the machine (owned for a month or so), but has not happened since. My guess was that it was somehow resolved when I changed the batteries out. Will be good for all to find out the diagnosis. Good luck!

From the replies this seems to be an ongoing problem. I have only had my machine about three weeks and so far I haven't experienced this. Hopefully Minelab has resolved the problem. Anyway, Keep us updated on what they tell you.

"Cat hair!!!" <laughing> Really now!! I'm wondering how cat hair could have caused such a problem... Am I missing something :wiggle:

Unearthed- That's some fish story explanation they gave about cat hair as the culprit to the malfunction. Kudo's to Sgt. Riker
crazyjoe999- Agreed, batteries do tend to get a little dusty. After each hunt,I remove the batteries from the pack, dust 'em off and place them in a cool dry place until the next hunt.
eliisawolf- Happy to hear your situation is resolved,,,at this time.

Daug- I've had my Safari about 1.5 yrs and this has been the only time that I've had any issues.....and according to the original shipping box /container, this is a Malaysian manufactured unit.

Was tracking Safari through UPS and it was received Thursday in Illinois. On Friday, I spoke with Lon who signed for it and he informed me that the Safari repair turn around time period is 10-15 days (Xcalibur is up to 20 days). They haven't had the opportunity to examine it yet, but I pleaded if they can look at it over the next few days, so that I may have it back in time for next weekend. Thanks for all the feedback.

Sorry to hear that.

I had my SAFARI for two years now, never had Anny problem with my !

Its electronic = fragile

Sorry to hear about your problem. Hope it gets resolved soon! I know you are ready to do some serious hunting now that the temps are starting down.
Keep us posted,
Bunker

Thanks Prep. Me too, and when it's in the car, it's secured with a rear seat belt.
This afternoon I spoke with Darren at Minelab and though it was signed for last Thursday, they have x amount of returned units to look at (the old "first-in first-out" scenario) there's still that 10-15 day turn around time. I pleaded with him that the re-set drill worked and IMO the loose female cable connector portion is the culprit. I do hope they get to it tomorrow so that I can possibly have it back for this coming weekend. I'll follow up again near COB tomorrow.

I live about 50 minutes away from Chicago Minelab repair shop if mine gets sick I am going to drive it directly there to emergency room.Mine was made in Ireland.I really do not like the fact they even have X amount to repair before looking at yours.

Sorry this update is late. I had received the Safari back eight days ago and a quick test run shows it's working quite well.
Minelab wound up replacing the keypad, foam hand grip and pressure block (not sure what that is) for general wear. They also replaced the strain relief for potential faults. Lastly, the female connector in the control box was replaced and faulty parts were included in the return shipment. Darren - the highly qualified technician, indicated that a pinched wire off the connector may have been the problem. Very appreciative of Minelab's customer service manager Lon and Darren for keeping me updated through the process. In addition, there was no cost to me, so I urge my fellow MD'ers to return your warranty registration cards in a timely fashion so you're covered if a rare technical issue arises with your unit. Let me add that on a personal note that a three year warranty is a comparatively short time frame. Even my BH had a five year warranty. So, it's quite important to take special care handling and maintaining our units. HH

Glad to hear you got it back and that it is working perfectly. Sounds as if you almost have a new unit. Are you saying that a pinched wire off the connector may have been the whole problem and they replaced the other things just to be safe?

Good deal

HH,
Don

Mine did the same thing a month after I got it. I was just starting a hunt and it wouldnt stop. Decided to call it a day. I thought about removing the battery pack and reinstalled and that seem to solve the problem. Hasnt happen again.
