I'm brand new to detecting and have only hunted 3 times..my third time being today which produced my first silver 1935 dime!! Getting started i've been using my dads GTP 1350..but i want a Safari because i hear it has less bells and whistles and a shorter learning curve than Etrac and Explorer SE..true? Also i've heard the depth is just as good..is Safari better than GTP 2500 or the 1500?

Safari over Garrett?

Hi BLRRLB,
Don't know much about Garrett...so I can't do any comparison. I started with a Safari and am very pleased with it. I did buy an Etrac a year or so later. The Safari has the same processor as the Etrac so I don't see much difference in depth. The Etrac has more bells and whistle and a bigger learning curve as you stated. The Safari is a great machine and will serve you well for years to come. It can be considered a turn on and go machine but it took me about 6 months for the light to really come on and know what the Safari was really telling me. Comparing the different modes and tones. I would HIGHLY recommend Andy Sabisch's book on the Safari for sure. Watch a lot of videos on youtube. I bought a 6x8 SEF coil for those trashy areas.

Great reply Bunker,I started out detecting with Garrets in the 70's so I have soft spot for them.I helped an elderly man get started in the hobby his kids gave him brand new 2500 with all the coils.Nice machine but is not as good in trash and about 7 inches about best I could get out of it Safari all the way.Took me about 40 hours before the Safari really started talking to me also be patient.6x8 coil down the road later on in iron trash sites

BLRRLB- I think it's all relative to the sites you hunt. Like laws of diminishing return, the more we keep hammering public parks,playgrounds,etc, the less silver and other goodies there are for others to recover as many of us use these deep seeking Minelabs. Hey, any day finding just one silver coin or relic from these popular sites is a good day for me. That is, unless one has done the research and obtained permission to hunt private (virgin ) property,where your silver and older coins/finds would likely be more frequent. In the roughly 22 months since I've owed a Safari,I'd guess finding just 20-25 silver coins, 2 10 karat rings, and less than 10 silver rings. Though I started as a coin shooter and still love it, I believe that I enjoy recovering relics just as much, anything from belt and shoe buckles to bullets & cartridges.
