Scraps of the Week

Well-known member
I didn't find much this week, but I did get out a couple times and had a chance to do a little scouting as well.

Yesterday after work, I hit one of the local overhunted parks and picked up a couple of earlier wheaties; 1918-D and 1929-S. Always feels good to walk off that park with an older coin or two. Some areas are still frozen  , some are perfect. so I was glad to find some huntable turf. I was using my regular Pro coil this week.

Today I stopped by the yard of an older home that I hunted last year. The current owner is unsure of the exact date the house was built, but believes it was around 1900. It has a sandstone block foundation, so I think that date is close. I never finished hunting the yard last time I was there and hadn't made it back. Today was a good day to see what I skipped. Unfortunately, part of the yard was still frozen, but I did get to go over some previously hunted area and a bit of new area.

Well, I skipped 5 zinc's, 18 regular copper pennies, a small handful of pull tabs, screw caps and junk, 4 wheaties, 17, 44, 47 and 57, an I899 IH (favorite find of the day) and a mans silver ring that says 10k G F & Sterling <V>. The ring rang up 8-48 and gave me a start. Thought I had a silver quarter or half. Too bad about the G F. on the ring. Ah well.

I plan on going back in a week or two and see if I can actually finish. Still need to remove some more garbage signals and check out the parking strips.

For the afternoon, I stopped by my friends house that just picked up a White's V3 and it trying to get a grip on how to work it. He'll get it. Just takes some time in the field. Between the two of us, should be able to get it figured out.

Hope that all of you are getting out to hunt as the weather gives opportunity.

Good luck out there.

Thanks for the story and the pictures Rich! I love the way you say "still frozen". We'll be "still frozen" for another month and half or more....I'm afraid.

nice finds Rich it might snow down here tonight I hope not .. I will contact you soon about hunting here or up their thx

Hey there detectorfreak74 -

I mentioned that I did some asking around at Jan's club meeting (National Utah Token Society - NUTS for short  ) The president of the club, utmike, did some research and found the following:

**********

Howdy-

I did some online research and found that his city has an ordinance 5-2-103.5 which generally states that it is a misdemeanor to dig in or disturb grassy areas in city parks. I can see how an officer could apply this to detecting. although I couldn't find anything that specifically addressed metal detectors.

I read your post and agree that the best course of action is to make friends with the city and obtain some type of written permission. I have had some success with this in Ogden with park employees after demonstrating my recovery methods are not harmful.

Hope this helps!

Mike

There you go for that. As for hunting, sounds like you are making hay when the sun shines. Great job. I really like my E-trac as well. Great detector that gives me a lot of confidence when I do get to go hunting. I try to get out a day or two after work as time allows.

You should be able to use the members only messaging here soon. I can't remember the guidelines for new members, Ray-Mo should know. You can reach me via PM here on findmall or via email.

Rich, thanks for the story and pictures. What is that with the hole in the middle, it looks like the old tax tokens I find in Oklahoma. HH - Randy

Hey Rich,
How the heck are you finding stuff with the ground frozen brother? I got the itch to get out but all that dark smog and cold temps keeps me feeling like crap so I left to visit family out of state. Only problem is they have more snow than we do at home. Dang.

Good stuff Rich, WTG! I love Indians and only found 1 last year. Hope to double that this year.:minelab:

It's a Utah State 1 mil Sales Tax Token / Emergency Relief Fund - It's a love/hate relationship finding these things. Size wise, they look like a dime, and there isn't much mass to them so they are a bit more difficult to find than wheat pennies. If I find these in an area that's been hunted before, I know that I have a good chance of silver dimes. Down side is that they can fool you into thinking you have a silver dime when you first see them in the hole. They're aluminum and rot like a zinc penny.

From other posts, I noticed that Oklahoma and Washington have tax tokens that look similar.

Not all the ground is frozen, at least it wasn't. Mighty cold Sunday and today. South facing areas that catch sunshine most of the day will typically be huntable when we get a few days in a row of upper 30's temps. Gets a little wet and cold sometimes, but it is a relief to swing the detector for an hour or two. And it is always nice to turn up an IH penny and some wheaties.

Looks like research time for the next week.

Thanks for the kind comments everybody.
