When you are swinging the Detector back and forth, is there a lot of Nulling (Background Silence instead of a Hum) below the Coil? If so, this is why the Screen won't update fast. The Screen won't update the ID until you get past the item that is Ferrous or Iron. Apparently, you must be getting a Good Signal from a Conductive Non-Ferrous Target but there is Iron next to it. There's a few ways to tackle this. For Newbies, I would start by going to the Menu, click the Select Button, then go down the list and X out the Nails and Crown Caps. Then hit Menu, then Audio, then Volume, and then adjust the Gain to 5 or 6. Then hit the Detect Button. This will help quiet down the SE a bit more. You may also have to try Semi-Auto (line going around the number) and Manual (no line) Sensitivity and lower the Sensitivity from 22 to 20 or 18. Also, before any Hunt, Noise Cancel. This will make the SE as stable as it can be at your location. Also, when you get the Good Signal, try and keep an eye on the location of the Target and just sweep tightly in that specific area, back and forth to get a better ID. There is also going to Advanced Mode but this is not for Newbies that are just starting. This Setup will make the user hear Everything which will more likely discourage the user than help them. But if you want to try it, this is what to do. Click on Menu, then click on Advanced. Go to Menu, click on Options, then Recover, then Darken or turn on Fast and have Deep Off which will not be Darkened. This will help a bit but if not totally, then you will have to get either a Smaller Coil or Click on Iron Mask and set it at -31 (not sure what it is for All-Metal on the SE) All-Metal, then go to Menu, then click Audio, then click Sounds, then click Ferrous. Then Detect Button. You will now here everything which will most likely be Way Too Much for you to handle. Most Iron or Ferrous Targets will be a Low Tone and Most all Conductive Target or Non Ferrous Targets will be a High Tone. Some Rusty Bottle Caps will read High Tone along with some Bent Rusty Nails, but with some practice, you will know what to dig and what not to dig. The Bottle Caps will read on the Bottom of the Screen and to the Right I believe. You would have to test this to make sure. The Nails will read in the Top of the Screen, most of the time in the Left Corner unless it is bouncing around. You also may have to Drop the Gain Down to 5 or 6. To do this, go to Menu, then Options, then Volume, and then you will see the Gain Adjustment. Then just hit Detect when done adjusting. As you can see, the Explorer SE is a very versatile detector and has many different ways of being setup. It takes time to learn all the New Sounds but if you practice with your Test Garden, then you will know what to look for on the Screen. Also, start out by using Digital. Dig 5-7 Conduct Signals, and anything 23 and above also. These are where you Coins will fall for the most part, not including the Fatty Indians, 3 Cent Pieces, or Gold Coins. Just the normal Coins that was most likely dropped. The answer to the 2nd question is most likely Noise Cancel. If you have Electrical Interference, the SE will just chatter without moving the Coil. If this isn't the case, then I would go to Menu, the Select, then X out Nails, Crown Caps, Jewelery, Fe Coins. Check Mark the Coins and Screw Caps only, the rest of the items listed X out. Then hit Detect. This will be a tighter pattern and cut down on the noise. Also, you could try going to Menu, then Options, then Recover, then click Fast Off, Deep On. The detector will now have more time to look at each Target and help give better Signals and cut down on falsing and erratic Screen ID's. I hope some of this helps you out and if not, PM me with some examples of your problems and I will gladly try and get you on the path to success. Don't get discouraged! You have one of the best, if not the best detectors in your hands and the rewards in learning it will be AWESOME! Good Luck and HH.
