smaller coil?

Ive heard smaller coils will help with the trashier areas and makes the coins stand out more? Any input on this? and if so what is the best smaller coil to purchase for the e-trac for coin hunting?
Thanks Jordan

With a smaller coil naturally you won't have as many targets under it and you can seperate the targets better. If there is enough trash to use a small coil make sure your machine is set on high trash. Sometimes fast on will help also. I myself like the Sun-Ray X-5 but I have not heard any complaints from the other small coil users. If you have not read Bryce Brown's field test on coils do so before you buy. You will find his coil tests on the Explorer forum. HH :minelab:

Coil size does have an impact on your hunting. So does coil design.

Smaller coils "see" less area at a time, so in heavy trash you have less chance of trasha nd treasure being under the coil at a given time. This gives cleaner signals and better chance of finding the goods. The down side is that small coils get less depth.

Coil design has a big effect too. "normal" coils are a co-planar type. They are responsive under the entire coil. "DD" coils (like the stock E-Trac coil) only respond under a strip down the middle. This means you get the depth of a big coil, but doesn't have so much ground under the hot spot.

Best coil depends on the local conditions. Personally, if I'm not using the stock 11 inch coil, I like the Sunray 8 inch.

In my experience, in general old house sites you get 98% of the coins by going over a site with the pro-coil, and maybe squeeze out a few more with a smaller coil.

In dense iron patches or where trash is very close together (10+ per swing) the smaller coil will help separate the tones better for sure.

I've got a coiltek 'joey' which works well on the etrac. But I've also got the big whopper SEF 15x12 (i think that's the size), given how well that performs for me I'd suggest you have a look at their small coil SEF equivalent, as that may perform slightly better than the Joey.

Just to note, when you're in these trash packed areas the e-trac responds really well to a slow swing, try slowing your swing down as well as the small coil....works a treat.

Good luck mate,
Greg

You can't go wrong with either the Sunray 5.5" or the Excelerator 6" I've used both and they both work great. They are pretty much all I use now and I find jewelry with them which is what I am after. They are both deep as well. Good luck!
