Stainless or Aluminium Scoop?

This be it?

addon.php

Thought about making a digging tool out of titanium, like a cut-down shovel with a short handle.
May be good on dirt targets too?

Number9.I live in Ukraine.Odessa.
course sand scoop is better than the rocket ... :)
it was just a joke what would have been understandable as possible and technologies....

and then stealth.... stealth, our missiles do not understand what stels ..... :)

they just knock stealth .... :),and with you as with taxpayers' money to take these tales ...

I've got a 6" long handled scoop imported from the US (I'm in the UK) as I thought it would be better than a shovel. Either I'm not using it right or compared to the shovel it's very slow going on shallow or deep stuff.

The only advantage I can see (out of the water) is less wear and tear on your back. If you're not a water hunter I'll probably be in the minority by saying you don't need/want a scoop just a long handled shovel. I can safely say I've walked away from more deep targets with the scoop than with the shovel :goodnight:

I use a shovel too to better effect than a scoop but only in certain circumstances, In the wet/damp sand the shovel is quicker if the hole doesn't fill in with water (especially deeper targets)also a lot more accurate at getting whatever out, if you have a lot of water seapage and caveins and in fine gravel or near the waters edge i find the scoop with a lifting handle is better, also in the water. Horses for courses, all depends on the beach and its makeup(bending down with a shovel is good exersize too)hence i use both

I've been thinking about this a lot. I'm tempted to buy one of those cheap hand operated post hole augers. Years ago, I had a sand screw and although I didn't go in the water I used to screw it in 9" or so pull it out and repeat. Worked ok, but not what it was designed for and soon broke.

Maybe a cheap steel post auger could be the answer. Either that or I bought a too big to handle size wise (for me anyway) scoop.

I have both stainless and aluminum clam guns. They are 6" in diameter and some are 2-3' long. You lean on top of the gun and work it into the sand around the clam hole. Then you put your finger over a hole in the handle and it creates a vacuum in the clam tube as you lift the gun out of the sand. A big plug of sand comes out and if you're lucky, a clam is in it. Why wouldn't that work for recovering MD targets??
People use them everywhere except in the dry sand. The only problem I can see is it's a two handed operation. You'd have to lay the detector down or have it hanging from a Swingy Thingy or something. Talk about going deep in one dig!! Often I need to do a second dig as the clam heads for China. You can easily go down the same hole a second time. Plug the hole in the handle creates the vacuum again and you just suck out the stuff that started 18" down. I would think that might solve part of the problem of chasing the sinking item when you need to go deeper. If it wasn't clam season, might be a game cop or two asking questions, but duh! I always dig clams with a metal detector in my hand to make it sportier for the clam...Maybe somebody has tried it. Jim

Jim,
You have been eating to much geoduck with fine wine? (kidding) Here is a video, not that great but shows the basic tool.

When a video is posted to this board, all I see is an empty square.
When the SAME video is posted to another MD board, I'm able to view it.

So... What's the problem here!?

Hello all! WOW! I really started something with this thread never expected this question to get to 3 pages. Thanks to all who have contributed. The main reason I'm looking at scoops is that I suffer from a severe Hiatus Hernia, which means, as I bend over to dig, lay down etc my stomach contents will travel back up my throat. Yes I know, not pleasant. I'm awaiting an operation that should hopefully fix the problem, but obviously want to reduce bending as much as possible, hence my need for a scoop.
Have just come back from a wonderful time in paris with my girlfriend and my to-do list is now topped with the scoop, so I shall be taking ALL your advice into consideration. Thanks again,
Happy Hunting, Mark

Here's a couple of my videos. http://rutube.ru/tracks/2393162.html?v=f94e1970fdb2dcf75e26b3fb29282843
shown how to work in water with a bodyboard where there is at the bottom of pebbles

I've used an Aluminum 6" scoop with grab handle here in West Florida wading in soft sand and it works great for me. Don't think I would go any smaller. It's not going to bend unless you try to move giant rocks or something. Not as heavy as the stainless.

alex.... Say What!?

Well.. we dug many holes from Nags Head to north of Corolla with the two titanium scoops without any problems.
The only real problem with "Ti" was the big mouth... it likes to gulp sand! The handle on "Ti" seemed to have to much of an angle for the heavy loads of sand. The angle on the "Patty B" seemed better and the 6 1/4" wide head made removing wet sand easier... or lighter.

The next test will be St. Simons Island, Georgia over the Thanksgiving week. I don't think Georgia will be any problem either... we'll see!!

I said that $300 for titanium scoop must be pretty much expensive??? How much didi you pay for your titanium scoop?
alex.

rjcnmI already told to Alex that in my scoop only the titan on 75-90USD (35USD/kg) and thus I can not buy all necessary elements (a pipe, Edge rigidity) the necessary diameter.
Therefore the price in 300USD I consider low.
While in the absence of the necessary titan manufacture is suspended.

Number9.a What mark of the titan on yours scoop?
On mine BT1-0.....

Number9.I am interested in a titanium alloy?
labels do not interest me ...
