I went back to the site of an old 1800's home site thats on the back of our farm the other day. All that remains of the house is a few cut stones here and there - we use this area for a horse pasture. There was only an hour of daylight remaining and it was snowing pretty hard. This is a real tough place to hunt because it's loaded with hardware from the home, tons of nails and even big chunks of cast iron. You don't find many keepers at this location - but when you do - it's something good ! I've only found two coins at this site - a 1857 Half Dime and a 1904 Barber Dime.
I was hunting for about a half hour when I got a nice hit - it bounced around a lot but it kept coming back into the FE 12 - CO 47 range.
Tough digging with the frozen ground - but worth it ! Found this Sterling Silver Ring with a 1 1/4" long stone - approx. 5" to 6" down.
I know I didn't hit the ring with my digger - it must have been crushed by tractor or pickup traffic over the years.
I took the ring to my friend the jeweler and he said that it was a real nice old piece and that he could repair the broken band - but not till after Christmas.
Happy Holidays ! --- Mark
