Stupid question?

OK I have an E Trac on order ( the wait is unbearable ). I've been looking for a extra coil for use in moderately trashy areas and have pretty much decided on the Sunray X-8. I was going to order tonight and see that the website offers a lower shaft also for the coil. My question is whether or not the lower shaft is required or will the coil work with the stock shaft supplied with the detector? If not required, what is the advantage to buying the lower shaft? Thanks in advance

Any coil that will work will fit the stock lower shaft.People get extra shafts to make the change from one coil to the next faster.By the way i too am waiting on an E Trac, this is my fourth week, and it's killing me.
So don't feel all alone,i'm right there with ya.

You also might want to consider the 6x8 SEF for your etrac. IMO it's much more stable and hits really deep for a 8 inch coil.

I have the X8 and the X12 and the 10X12 SEF, I used the X-8 allot with the se it worked great and was deep also. But since I have gotten the E trac I have not used it. It seems to do just fine in trashy areas.

Another accessory to consider is the X-1 probe, and since the coil wire is on the outside of the shaft, changing coils is a breeze, and I have not needed extra shafts. I got the X-1 before even considering other coils.

Thanks all. After reading all the coils tests by Bryce (thanks to him for all the great posts!!) I just ordered a 6x8 SEF from Kellyco not 10 minutes ago. I already got an email that it is on back order:surrender:. I'm having a terrible time getting items. I'm still waiting on my E Trac and have not even got a shipping confirmation yet. I've called multiple dealers about the X-1 probe and the E Trac and nobody has either in stock and are saying several weeks to get them. Now the 6x8 SEF is on back order. What gives? Is there some sort of metal detecting craze going on? I realize that the volcanic ash situation in Europe may be having some impact but this is getting crazy I've never had so much trouble spending at least $2K in all my life!:surrender:

Have you tried Detector Depot?
I ordered my X1 probe from them about 2 weeks ago and received it in three days from the time I placed the order.

Thank you so much! After seeing your post I went directly to their site and ordered the X-1 probe mounted on the shaft and ordered an extra lower shaft for the 6x8 SEF. Thanks again.

I had 4 coils for the Safari before I upgraded to the etrac. For me - the x-8 was my favorite coil - Haven't used it on the etrac yet though. I pulled a lot I missed with the pro coil in a very trashy mid-1800's yard. though i have also heard great things about the 8x6 SEF.
