Swamp Finds

Life isn't easy digging for relics. I much prefer the wet/dry sand
the beaches have to offer. The tree roots, poison ivy and bugs
make relic hunting where I live a 2 month venture at best.
Pictured are updated photos of relics found in a swampy area since mid January.
I found out the hard way that ants build their nests on the dry edges
of swamps. I was on my knees probing for a find when they attacked.
They got inside my clothing...50 to 70 bites later I was still looking for more
relics. I stayed 2 more hours because my male ego wouldn't let those ants
run me out of the swamp.
Anyway, the 2 shells together pose a mystery. The one on right is part of a Hotchkiss
but the one with the semi hollow top and brass ring..no idea.
There are 3 pics of the other mystery. Any ideas?
My puss filled ant bites and I thank you!

I'm no help with the ID but very impressed.

fuse. there is a type of primer cap that sets on the top and on impact it slams the inside top which sets off the powder charge

That's gotta be it! I found 2 within 50 yards of each other.
Thank you!
The shell fragment with the brass ring and the partially indented top remains a mystery.

The fragment is about 2" high and not quite 10" round
There is a very small hole in the center bottom otherwise it's solid.
The bottom inside the brass ring isn't flat but rounded like the bottom of a 3" Hotchkiss shell.
If I read my research correctly, it was fired
at Union troops using a nearby road to assemble.

Nice ! I'm even jealousererer! Mind blowing relics!

Great job and nice finds. I concur with the info provided above regarding the ID of your shell finds. C C H
