Ten minute hunt yields coolest looking relic I ever found...

Erik in NJ

New member
but what is it? I only got in about ten minutes hunting time this evening until the downpour. This item was deep (about 12") in a park that dates back to the mid to late 1800's. I got a nice deep coin hit and when I dug, no signal with the X-1....figured it had to be something good and deep so kept digging and just when I finally got a good signal on the X-1 in the hole (top of probe below ground level) it started to rain quite heavy, but I managed to pull out this gem! Very ornate - looks like the small hand swivelled at one time - word PATENTED is etched along it. It's quite heavy - I think it was brass and it appears that it was mounted on a small chain (see remaining link). Notice that the rivet (?) that hold the small hand on is somwhat off-center on the rear view. Silver quarter is from a prior hunt (coin was dead on edge) and is there for perspective.

Thanks for any info or educated guesses!

I don't have an educated guess,,,heck I don't even have an uneducated guess:smoke::cool:...but that is very neat looking.

The quarter next to it gives a good perspective as to the size of the relic. I bet that baby blew smoke outta' your ears:clapping:

It'll be interesting to see what some of the forum members come up with as to what it is:thumbup:

Good stuff...whatever it is...and nice find.

Hi Bryce,

Thanks! Actually it hit like a deep wheat/silver...kinda muted and warbly, but the pinpoint seemed oddly strong which I guess is a give-away for a larger item, but the weather was getting real bad so I wanted to get out of there soon.....last thing I wanted to see was a flattened soda can or iron pipe in the bottom of the deep hole......I thought it was going to be junk at one point when I first touched it....it was on 45 degree angle. When I was finally deep enough to get a signal with the X-1 it was a real sweet sound....well I hope someone's got a good guess -- either way!

i have not a clue  but it looks old :minelab: does find the deep stuf wow wtg erik !!

Hey hey very cool. To me it kinda looks like part of an old scale of some sort. Well its very cool indeed. HH L8R

Hi Jay, Several things when through my mind at first - picture hook (nah), key hook (nah), sword hanger (?), sun dial (?)....the first of the two arms pivots and the rear one is fixed....maybe gravity would have caused the smaller arm to pivot down towards the ground so that something could be attached and not fall off until the arm was rotated up....I don't know.....Thanks for your post!

That is a very nice relic :) and quarter very nice esp. with your time constraints!!

WTG! Erik!

Nice relic find. I think the guy on the "Whatzit" forum has it pegged.

Hi Lori,

Thanks for the compliment - I was very surprised to unearth it myself especially before the downpour started! Seems to be a daily occurrence around here lately.

Yes, Johnnyl seems to be pretty darn close and certainly knows his relics - I'm amazed that he's been able to get so close to what it probably was so fast. Thanks for your post!

Very odd find but a very ornate one as well.
I like these kinds of finds.
It looks as though you got a good ID from another member as well.
Good dig Erik.

looks old but that little link on the end looks like a piece of chain link that you would get at a hardware store. Neat find.Gl to you and HH.GR
