but what is it?
I only got in about ten minutes hunting time this evening until the downpour. This item was deep (about 12") in a park that dates back to the mid to late 1800's. I got a nice deep coin hit and when I dug, no signal with the X-1....figured it had to be something good and deep so kept digging and just when I finally got a good signal on the X-1 in the hole (top of probe below ground level) it started to rain quite heavy, but I managed to pull out this gem! Very ornate - looks like the small hand swivelled at one time - word PATENTED is etched along it. It's quite heavy - I think it was brass and it appears that it was mounted on a small chain (see remaining link). Notice that the rivet (?) that hold the small hand on is somwhat off-center on the rear view. Silver quarter is from a prior hunt (coin was dead on edge) and is there for perspective.
