The best( and most unexpected) find me and Dad have found all year.

Well, as far as coins go. Decided to get out today for a couple of hrs. First time in about a month. We went to a park that was probably built some time around the 1940s. And guess what the old man just happened to find?? A large cent!!!! First one he has ever found in almost 20 yr of MDing. Said he almost didn't dig it because it was so close to a swingset pole and the ground was as hard as a rock. It was about 5 in. down. Now as you will see from the photo, it is severely corroded. So severely corroded in fact, that not only can you not make out any of the date, but you can also only faintly see details. The only word that is actually readable, at least to me, is the word "cent". Well, I guess that's what happens when a coin spends over 100+ yr in the ground. What I want to know is how it got there.

Also would like to know if it would be a good idea to clean it and how to clean. We were thinking about the electric method. Good, bad idea??

Other finds of the day:

Dads:
$5.00
3 toy cars
Putt Putt token from 1981
Large cent
3 wheaties

Me:
$5.21
toy airplane
Panama penny
wheatie

First 2 pics are of large cent. 3rd pic is of token. 4th of wheaties. 5th of toy cars.

Sweet finds Rosce I wouldn't clean it at all. At least that is what I hear from pretty much everyone!!

real good job. how many times do we dig a target that we have tried to talk ourselves out of digging and we are glad we did? it pays off sometimes.

If you clean it you run the risk of losing what little detail you have left and then you'll be left with nothing more than a copper disc. Those old coppers are unforgiving when it comes to being cleaned. I would just protect it and enjoy it as is.

Congrats to you and your dad on a great find.

Oh yeah!:yo:Luv them large cents!:super:Congrats!:beers:Personally, I would leave it as is. Maybe just let it soak in some olive oil for a few weeks. Happy Hunting!:)

Roscue2 - Looks like you and your Dad make an awesome team! Love the large cent!:garrett:

I figured you've been away from here because school started up. Those are some good finds especially the large cent. I found a large cent a long time ago with very faint details. I rinsed it in some water and all the details vanished completely. Take from that what you will.

Glad you got to get out for a while.

Chris

And yes Cwilk, school has kept me from MDing. Can only get out now on Friday afternoons and weekends. HH!!
