The Safari is Awesome

acasto

New member
Took my new safari to Galveston today. No big league finds, but I was pulling clad and 2 silver dimes from 10 to 12 inches down in the wet sand. One of the dimes was next to some trash, but the Safari sniffed it out. Used the beach settings that Sabisch suggested for the beach in his book. Best 17 bucks I could have spent to learn this machine. Back to the beach tomorrow morning.

acasto,
Keep me posted, now and then, on how you like your Safari. I'm thinking
about buying one.

reltolbert: There was a good buy on one in the classifieds. Good Luck. Get Andy's book. And by the way congratulations on your finds acasto. The Safari is excellent at seperating good targets from trash. As you have already found out. HH :minelab:

hershey1,

I have to wait until about August 15 before I will have the money to buy a Safari.
I also have to sell one of my detectors by then.

I hope by then the service and repair problems with Minelab are better.

I thought about buying one from Kellyco, but you have a 90 day return policy
at Cabellas with no questions asked. Get more goodies from Kellyco for
the same price, or a good used one.

hershey1,

Are you talking about the Metal Detector Classified Forum?
I don't see the Detector Depot.

Reltobert

I don't think you can go wrong with the Safari. It's very user friendly, and don't forget to get the book. It is worth it's weight in gold. (pun intended)
Got mine from these guys. Could not beat the price, and shipping was real fast. http://www.theminelabstore.com/

Came with everything except batteries. Minelab digging tool, carry case, headphones, pouch. Just add batteries and start hunting.
Good luck with you search.

Tony

acasto,

I did order the book, 'Mastering the Quattro by Minelab'. When you said you got it
from these guys, whom are they? Kellyco? Detector Depot? or ?
I have to wait till my wife is out of town next month to buy the Safari.
She would think I'm nuts buying another Metal Detector. I will be
selling one of mine, so she won't be too upset especially after I start finding
some jewelry and gold. Ha Ha. However, this will be my most expensive
Metal Detector.

Sent you a PM

Acasto,

Got it. Thank-you. Maybe big Brother is watching over some of us, if you know what I mean.

Do you think the Minelab Safari does a better job of ID-ing than the Minelab x-terra 705 or
is this comparing apples to oranges?

The only other MD I have any experience is the Xterra 305. But from what I have read, the answer would be yes. You are comparing 2 very different machines between the 705 and the Safari.

acasto,

Thank you for your opinion. For me having a detector that will give me a good probable ID
means a lot. I can't tell you how many pull tabs, nails, etc. I and many others have dug up thinking
it was a coin or a piece of jewelry. Frustrating.
I'm sure I will dig up some of the junk with my future Safari, but hopefully not as much.
My best detector that I have that will do a good job of ID-ing, for the money, is the
Omega 8000. That's why I'm keeping it for a back-up.
I asked that question because I have never owned the Safari or the x-terra 705
and there's a $300 price difference between the two so I want to be sure that
the higher priced Safari has a better chance of ID-ing.
Of course it takes time to learn how to use a new Detector.
I'm going to study the Safari manual and read the book, 'Mastering the Quattro by Minelab'
before I buy the Safari.

Concerning my future 'Safari' purchase, should I use the 8 Alkaline batteries only?
Or should I spend $113 for the NiMH battery pack and charger?
Any advice will be appreciated.

I've only used Duracell alkaline batteries (bulk purchase at Home Depot) in the 4 months that I've owned my safari. Been getting about 10-13 hrs on a new set of alkaline, running factory settings coin , c&j w/ auto sensitivity. I know other members have commented at length on the rechargeable . Here's one of the latest links = http://www.findmall.com/read.php?3,1231692,1233910#msg-1233910

kschae4,

Thanks for the advice and the link. After I buy the Safari, I believe I will start out using the
alkaline batteries to see how it operates with those. As you said, Home Depot or Costco will
have good prices on bulk batteries.
You are doing well getting 10-13 hours on a set of batteries compared to what other members
are getting on their Safaris'.
I've heard the commit that Safari owners wished there was a back light on the detector. Can you
imagine the battery drain if the back light stayed on all the time.
It's odd that the less expensive x-terra 705 has a back light and the Safari doesn't.

I use the Duracell batteries also. Have 10 to 12 hours on the set in there now, and still got 3 bars. However, I do have a spare set in my pocket at all times. You never know......
Don't think you will go wrong if you decide on the Safari. Like you, it was a large purchase for me also. Bot I can honestly say I have no regrets.

acasto,

Selling one of my detectors will help offset the Safari cost. I've always wanted
a more professional type Metal Detector and the Safari seems to be the one.
Does the little dust/rain hood come with the new Safari? I believe that I will buy a new
Safari detector since the warranty will not transfer from a used one. I feel more
comfortable with a 3 year warranty.

Funny you should ask about the cover. I just ordered that today along with a Garrett Pro pointer. It does not come with the Safari from the factory. Got cought in a shower that popped up Monday, and decided it would be a good buy.

acasto,

I think it is a good idea to have that dust/water cover. Where can I order one of those? I've tried
to get one for my Omega 8000 but couldn't find any. So I used the plastic sandwich bags and cut
out little holes for the knobs, headphone connections and coil wire connector to the housing.

If I'm reading the Safari manual correctly, I could fill the bar chart black (all discrimination) and
then notch the coins and other good stuff in. (One manual method). So that only the good
items will be detected. Is that correct?
