Three Ghost Town Treks, one Old Resort site, and a handfull of City Parks provide some "testing ground" for the Tesoro Tej

just goes to show the type of person running the show over there.....He's losing people going over there.....

But very informative and honest. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it all and found it very helpful. Thanks for all the trouble and time you put into it Monte. Your efforts and honestly are much appreciated and I cannot fathom why the other forum deleted this. Certainly you've always been very helpful on this and many other forums and such informative posts are far more useful than the one-upmanship "animal" posts causing rifts within the other brand specific forum.
My opinion..not meaning to continue stirring an already overcooked pot. I'm with DB(me), enough is enough. Lets have fun. <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">

Where did you see those miniature pots ???
If you can remember, please email me the address.

...but I was hoping to see the name of the Ogden park and whether or not there were any good targets left <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> . We really appreciate the work you did Monte. It deserved praise, not a delete.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to post a picture of that "rare" coin <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">

It was just too long and I edited quite a bit out.
The park we worked in Ogden, Utah was Liberty Park. I started detecting in '65 when I was living in Oregon, and in '68 we moved back to Ogden, my home town. I found my first Utah Indian Head in Liberty Park near the NE corner. As my brother, Ed, and I started working the parks there we would tend to give them associated names.
If you recall, Ogden's Liberty Park is located bet. Madison & Monroe. This 10 acre park has the sidewalks around it and then tree-lined walkways going from each corner toward the center. Either side of the NE walkway, especially along the trees on the westerly side of the walk, we referred to as <EM>"V Nickel Row"</EM> for the simple reason that we pulled more 'V' nickels out along there than anywhere else in the park.
Some of those trees are gone now, and the lush green lawn has a lot of buildup from mowings and leaf decay, etc. It looked like it was now about 3

Creating controversy, that is <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">
Hi Monte,
Truthful opinions are like a breath of fresh air in todays world of hype. Your report is much appreciated --- GOOD JOB ---!
When you do get a chance to test out Fisher's Coin Strike (CS), pay close attention to the settings the guys on the CS forum have found to work well. Settings are critical with the CS but I think you may like some of it's features/performance (especialy in trashy spots).
You might want to give Fisher's 1270 a whirl (if you haven't already). It is one I consider a "sleeper" in todays detectors. Got one for Deb & she didn't like the clicking on rejected iron (like the newer Tesoro's have) and she was used to being quiet in iron (like the older Tesoro models & Whites) , so I sent it to Fisher & they toned down the iron reject mode. Now it is super quiet in iron (like what you & I remember from Tesoros of past) and MUCHO DEEP. It isn't halo dependent as most detectors and has a "true" no motion all metal mode for pinpointing. You can size the target and also de-tune (double click trigger) over the target for precise pinpointing. The variable iron discriminator is also a big plus when relic and/or ghost town hunting. It has more features but you get the picture.
You may want to pick up one on trade or get used & test it in a iron ridden site (with iron mode set at 10). If it's clicky, etc. send it to Fisher to quiet down the iron mode --- makes a world of difference & is one very sweet detector (imo).
Thanks again for the report & look forward to your comments on the CS when you get to try one.

I had errantly typed 1965.. I can't sight-type and in my two-fingered approach to keyboarding and hurrying up, I zapped the '6' and did a back-space to add an '8' and didn't look at the screen.
Computers.
Thanks for catching my error. <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">
For some reason, every 3

Yes, the 1270 is sort of a "sleeper" and yes, I have tried it out. Former Fisher dealer friend let me take his demo for a spin for a week. Yes, it is 'clicky' </EM>like the post Sidewinder

Ya see, this is the kind of report I really appreciate...direct A/B comparisons in the field, mentions of both the plusses AND the minuses, etc. from a knowledgeable, unbiased poster with a solid reputation for shooting straight.
Now Monte, you need to plan a trip to my part of the country where the soil is highly unstable and has no mineralization to speak of and where "old" (read: pre-1930) coins start appearing at 13"+ depths <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Thanks for an incredibly informative post...

The Coin Strike does have a depth reading, just not in inches. It gives a #number reading relitive to depth. Once you get use to it, just like the Explorer, one knows "how deep" the target is by the reading.
Mr.Bill

Again, thanks for a very comprehensive report!
One issue that I don't recall you touching on that is important to me has to do with the useable depth of the two discriminators.
In my area, I have to go super deep for older stuff. My main detector, a CZ7a, ID's pretty accurately out to about 8", then becomes increasingly unreliable out to about 11"-12" where the ID and VCO pinpointing functions drop out, but autotune's reach continues for a few more inches.
In your experience with the Tejon, in either air or in-the-ground tests, where (in depth) do the discrimination circuits lose their usefulness? Is the "all metal" mode deeper than when discrimination is dialed in or does the Tejon act like many detectors whereby depth is related to degree of discrimination?
Any info at all here would be appreciated....
Thanks in advance.

when you and Chris compared against the bullet and zinc cent in that bad sludge, what were the coils being used?

That's right Gamer! Like about 3 weeks ago, I e-mailed Tesoro with a tech question, (why did the batteries leak in my new Hawkeye?) their site said that they would respond within 10 days ... YEH RIGHT! here I am 3 weeks later, and NOTHING <img src="/metal/html/angry.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":mad"> that SUCKS tesoro! at least with my old DFX, I got a response from them the very next day. SHARPEN UP TESORO! THE COMPETITION IS LEAVING YOU BEHIND <img src="/metal/html/nono.gif" border=0 width=22 height=19 alt=":nono">

You mentioned late in yopur post that you may swap out your Classic IDX for the older Classic ID....may i quickly as why? I have a good reason for asking.
Scott

Do you still use the CS.....if so how has it worked for you. I have read all of the settings the CS guys reccomend and had already tried all of those and mine just plain sucked. Had some potential....but wonder if it the first few machines had issues. No matter what settings i tried..and I tried every possible way....mine just had terrible target ID in trash...in iron...at depth...?
Just curious how you have done withit?
Scott

Hi Scott,
Sounds like you got a lemon bud. Mine was one of the first & worked very well. Better than I expected (once I figured out the settings). Back then it was trial & error but the guys on the CS forum have a handle on it now. If you are using their settings and it isn't performing -- ya got a lemon -- time to send it back to Fisher for a checkup (it's free -- covered under their lifetime waranty). Once it is fixed let me know how it is doing for you.
Al

Cool....uhhh also I meant I saw their settings and I had tried those on the one I bought from you a year and a half ago and it never worked right.
I have decided to stop being the guinea pig and refuse to buy a first release machine. I bought one of the first Tejons and it was broken right out of the box. got it back from tesoro but it never was quite right. So I have concluded I will stay away from new releases until the frenzy of production has mellowed.
I suspect maybe that my CS was bad last year. May try another one soon....that was why I asked you how they are doing. never made sense that it was so flaky...nothing..and I mean nothing would get mine to work.
Glad to see you still around. Hey...I moved to Arizona..Glendale actually....lasted 5 months and moved back here. Like relics...do not like that gold prospecting though. Man now THAT is work.
Scott
