To dig,or not to dig

Ok,Kind of a survey to see how many just dig signals they know is supposed to be good.
Starting out,is learning where the signals are supposed to register!
Quarters,Dimes,Nickels,Pennies,ok,so we get an idea of where those register,and off we go.
We are out hunting and we get a signal,(Lets say),Just under where a dime reads,
Now the question,to dig or not to dig.Ok,on one particular occasion,i had this signal,i went ahead
and dug it,hey whats this? a chain,oh cool,and it has all these littlecharms on it.
Not sure on the chain,but all the charms had .925 on the back of them.
Next example:
Hunting a park i know was old,i get a signal while in Iron mask,that reads,all the way to the left,
but at the very top of the screen! I dig,Not really expecting much out of this one.
What the heck,its a 1963 penny,Don't know why it registered here,but it was a coin none the less.
I have learned,the targets always don't register where they are supposed to.
And i have found myself going home,wondering about a particular signal.
Who knows why they don't register the way they should,could be an endless number of reasons,
everything is not always perfect,so dig a few extra signals next time,
You might be surprised.

I've been digging signals over the last week that sound interesting enough but the display is saying something else. The site I'm hunting is very clean and a lot of these iffy looking signals are turning out to be coins! The coin count at this location is WAY Up on normal, I still haven't covered it all yet.
I've just been in contact with another detectorist who only lives a few 100kms way and he has been experiencing the same phenomenon this last week or so as well. we've both been experiencing some dust storms where o lot of raised dust has been in the air (gives spectacular sunsets) and we are thinking that this might be having some sort of effect on things. I could be wrong though but the bottom line is, I'm having one of my best hunts of the year by trusting the sounds far more than the visual info.

I'm still learning my XS so I dig almost all high signals but I can pretty much tell now when its a shallow aluminum bottle cap or can fragment. At this point for me most deep signals are still "iffy" in my mind, but shallow coins are pretty easy. That little gold coin sounded alot like a pulltab but it was a bit more "intense" so it got my attention. I would say dig all interesting signals.

Most of my time is spent hunting the spots everyone else doesn't want to. Like the spots where my machine is in a total null. That is where I do my best at...listening for a deepie to squeak through.

90% of all the good sounding textbook hits disappeared years ago around here. I can literally walk for hours before getting a signal that begs me to investigate it...and I mean ANY signal from pulltab range on up.

If you listen for textbook hits only...the ones that sound 100% good from all angles...and ones that make the cursor do what it's supposed to do...you will go home with an empty pouch around here.

I have been getting a lot of "iffy" hits lately that sound all jumbled up because there are 3 or 4 targets directly in the hole with the good target. However if you creep the coil...take your time and listen...you can sometimes make out a nice high warble somewhere inbetween the mumbo-jumbo of mixed sounds caused by different targets being in there with the good one.
If you hear a higer tone in there...even if it's just momentarily...make sure you investigate it.

Same as for one way hits...or high pitched "iffy" hits that don't repeat all the time when you are investigating. Make sure you give them a thorough going over because it could be a coin under iron...beneath it...beside it...on top of it...etc.

Perfect example on digging the "iffy"...Barbara hunts with a Minelabs Excalibur they, null on Iron automatically.{And they have a slow recover time} All of these targets are encrusted with a Iron mixture. She said they nulled out but when she circled the targets she could hear a small squeak...so she dug a 1916 Barber Quarter, A Old Silver ring, and the 3rd coin was covered in the mix so bad we could not make it out.....Amazing

I get a lot of signals at are a high pitch sound and read 00-25, to dig them and find a beer can bottom, piece of old tin that is deep. Last Friday went with a couple friends to a old Hospital and got a text book 00-25 and high silver pitch, dug down about 8 to 9 inches to find a piece of metal about 4"x 8" with a corner bent over sitting strait up in the hole, finally got it all dug out to see what it was, some kind of old decorative piece. it sure got my heart going for a few minutes, I thought it was that first old silver coin I been waiting for. Next hunt I keep telling my self.

Didn't realize this until I hunted in areas where the hot rocks would be literally half my finds with the SE's. I was able to hunt both areas for 8 hours each without digging a single hot rock.

Do not ignore hot rocks on the SE though.....ALL of my silver halves sounded exactly like hot rocks when I dug them, and if I didn't dig the first one, I wouldn't have found the others.

On the flip side, now I am wondering if I am missing Halves with my Etrac, because if it doesn't pick up hot rocks and hot rocks hit where halves do on the SE, then maybe my Etrac misses halves, also? Oh, wait, silly me, an "Etrac is not an Explorer"...So everything is just magically delicious

Have you tried a gold ring?
I was just wondering,there were several that said the e-trac would not pick up a gold ring,
I might get one someday,so i am trying to learn all i can about them!
a lot seem to love the e-trac,i'm just hard to convince i guess.

I think that maybe they were talking about using the pre programmed patterns, that rings could be disced out Mine hits gold fine, I "learned" all my wife's rings into a pattern and it easily hit all of them, in fact, I dug a gold earring at about 4 1/2 inches Saturday afternoon in a farm field with bean stubble and it was about a 1/4 inch across, round sphere. Impressed me Other than that one piece, I haven't dug any gold rings, but then again, I don't hunt too many parks or soccer fields.

With the E-Trac those hot rocks hit on the very top and a little to the left where it is blacked out on the factory program. Halves dont hit here, but seens some silver dollars will and will be disc out. Also try and swing 3 or more quarters by the coil while in the hot rock reject of the factory setting and see what you think. Mine will null or break up at 3 and 4 will just null while 2 it is OK. You may miss the hot rocks, but feel you will miss pocket spills too. I just opened up that black area as we are not bother much with hot rocks.

That's the funny thing, mine doesn't hit ANY hot rocks, even if I am in all metal. The only thing I disc out in the right top of the screen is 1-29 to1-38 roughly, I might even open that up a little bit to 1-29 to 1-32 if I am not getting too much iron falsing and might increase it to include discing out 2-29 to 2-38 if it gets bad. (little box nails). I am usually in the dense trash setting, fast on, deep off, and difficult ground.
