Unknown Symbol

Does anyone know what this symbol means? It’s the circle with the cross inside. It is not a church as those are marked with another symbol. It’s on an 1874 atlas. Thank you!

Things that make you go Hmm . Try looking at some more maps , you may find one with a legend of the symbols . Also , Welcome to the forum .

Thank you! Yes unfortunately there aren’t any symbols key to be found on the other pages I have seen. The only thing I saw remotely close was a gas station but in 1874 I don’t think that was in hot demand. :)

I found a symbol closely resembling it on a map legend. It was a monument. Is there a monument in that spot on the actual land ? You can google old maps and legends also cartography symbols. Hope this helps .

Thats good to know. One of the homesteads that I detect is still in existence and on the old maps , it also had a blacksmith on site . They also made carriages for horses. I will see if they also used that particular symbol or if it is per cartographers discretion. You are welcome. Have fun on the hunts .
