As I drove down the road last week I watched a lot of cars parked along side the ditch lines. I was seeing this everywhere I went. I watched the young and the old walking, bending over, knelt, and setting down in the ditch lines looking for the mushrooms and asparagus. My first thought was how all of these people were trespassing and why we could not do this and metal detect. I thought about this and if the grass lines between the road and sidewalk was city property than the ditch lines must be city property as well. I asked a police officer and he said yes, have at it. He reminded me to becareful wearing headphones on the side of the road though. I planned a day at a location that I knew the road was old and went at it. I only hunted lines that did not have any houses in front of them. just fields. I had to take a trash bag with me because humans are slobs. I did a little ditch cleaning as I went along.

Well it was not an easy breezy clean up day but, did scare up a silver dime and 6 wheat pennies. one being my oldest dug. a 1910! I was surprised to dig these and zero clad. I guess being a ditch digger is not so bad after all!
1958-D Silver Dime
1910 Wheat
1920 Wheat
1929 Wheat
1935 Wheat
1937 -D or S not sure.
1938 Wheat.
I think I will try this again soon.

Very Good Idea..Anywhere a Person walked could have a treasure :)..They could have droped coins when they built the rd,or passer byers lose them. There arent alot of places left that man hasn't lost or dropped some form of trash/Treasure.. Even the thickest woods in most areas were cut down at one time in the last 200 years(in my state for sure NY).Something always gets dropped .Thx for sharing the idea and grats on your finds...HH

Thanks for the tip and pictures X!! Appreciate it!

WTG X-Man,

I used to park on the side of the road, run out into the pasture and harvest mushrooms (no asparagus) ... long ago and far away. Peace man...

I did plant an asparagus bed once, dug a plot about the size of a grave about three ft deep, put in the manure and laid the asparagus roots. It grew great asparagus every year until we moved, it probably still does.
